Mechanics on the Utilization
of Textbooks as Last Recourse
in Distance Learning Modality
A textbook is a collection of knowledge, concepts, and
principles of a selected topic or course. It's usually written
by one or more teachers, college professors, or education
experts who are authorities in a specific field. Most
textbooks are accompanied by teacher guides, which
provide you with supplemental teaching materials, ideas,
and activities to use throughout the academic year.

When thinking about how you want to use textbooks, consider the following:
• Use the textbook as a resource for students, but not the only resource.
• Use a textbook as a guide, not a mandate, for instruction.
• Be free to modify, change, eliminate, or add to the material in the textbook.
• Supplement the textbook with lots of outside readings.
• Supplement teacher information in the textbook with teacher resource books;
attendance at local, regional, or national conferences; articles in professional
periodicals; and conversations with experienced teachers.
• Modular Distance Learning involves individualized
instruction that allows learners to use self-learning modules
(SLMs) in print or digital format/electronic copy, whichever is
applicable in the context of the learner, and other learning
resources like Learner’s Materials, textbooks, activity sheets,
study guides and other study materials. Learners access
electronic copies of learning materials on a computer, tablet
PC, or smartphone. CDs, DVDs, USB storage and computer-
based applications can all be used to deliver e-learning
materials, including offline E-books.
Mechanics in Using the Textbooks in
Distance Learning Modality
1. All schools are required to distribute the textbooks/LMs to
the learners.
2. Textbooks are used as references to supplement the Self-
Learning Modules.
3. For schools with insufficient funds for the reproduction of
modules (SLMs/SLHTs), the textbooks may be used as the
LAST RECOURSE starting Q3.

4. For Kindergarten and Grades 1 to 3 MTB, Filipino and English, DepEd-USAID
Basa Pilipinas Trained Teachers should orient the home tutors on how to use the
Revised Teachers’ Guides and Learners Materials.
5. The instructional sequence specified in Basa Pilipinas TGs & LMS should be
strictly followed.
6. For other subjects in Grades 1 to 3 not covered by the Basa Pilipinas Project,
and all other subjects in Grades 4 to 12, teachers teaching the same Grade Level
& subject area (e.g. English 8 teachers) will meet before Q3 to identify the
lessons in the textbook/Learner’s Materials (LMs) that are aligned to Q3 MELCs.

7. Teachers of the same Grade Level and subject area shall
help each other in preparing the Weekly Home Learning Plan
reflecting the activities to be performed by the learner at
his/her home.
8. They shall also reproduce SLHTs (Grades 1 to 3 subjects
except MTB, Filipino and English and all subjects in Grades 4-
12) for lessons not found in the textbooks.
9. The Weekly Home Learning Plan will serve as learner’s
guide in accomplishing the tasks in the text book.

10. Group activities may be performed by the learner together with the home
tutor and any available family member.
11. Only the learner (NOT the home tutor/any other family member) is allowed
to answer the activities in their activity/test notebook or sheets of paper
placed inside a plastic envelope.
12. As soon as all the activities listed in the weekly home learning plan are
accomplished by the learner, the parents/home tutors will submit the
activity/test notebook or sheets of paper placed inside a plastic envelope to
the teacher.

Distance Learning Modality
13.The teachers will immediately check the answers, provide feedback and guide
parents/home tutors on what to do next based on the weekly home learning plan
for the learner.
14. Learners who can accomplish the given tasks earlier should be provided with the
weekly home learning plan for the following week.
15. Teachers should find a way to regularly monitor learners’ performance and
conduct individualized instruction via digital platform or through Purok sa SUGBO.
16. Proper health protocols shall be observed at all times.
