consisting of the use of
words in a structured and
conventional way.

particular form of a
language which is peculiar
to a specific region or social
group.’

CHARACTERISTICS OF LANGUAGE

1. Language is systematic.
2. Language is arbitrary.
3. Language is social.
4. Language always exists within a context.
5. Language is variable.

Each language has its own set of
rules and patterns, each
component related to each other.
2. Language is arbitrary.
It means that it is created based on
social agreement and that there is no
actual or logical relationship between
a word and the actual object it
represents, between form and
meaning.

It is socially acquired, learned,


and then used, not
genetically transmitted. We
learn or acquire language
through an existing speech
community.
4. Language always
exists within a context.
There are various settings that
affect the use and
understanding of a certain
linguistic expression. It differs
across cultures and is even
influenced by personality,
ideology, role, and situation.
5. Language is variable.
It changes over time, and it can even
perish if its speakers die or abandon
this language.
