DESDEN
“One of the best cities in Germany.” Rizal and Viola had experienced the Regional Floral Exposition. Rizal visited
Museum of Art and was impressed by a painting of “Prometheus Bound.”

LEIMERITZ, BOHEMIA (Now Litomerice, Czechoslovakia)


On May 13, 1887 Rizal and Viola visited Professor Blumentritt and it was their first meeting the Rizal painted a
portrait of the kind professor and gave it to him as a gift.

PRAGUE
Dr. Wilikomm showed to Rizal and Viola the historic city like tomb of Copernicus, famous astronomer, the museum of
natural history and many more.

BRUNN
According to Viola, “nothing of importance happened in this city.”

VIENNA
Rizal and Viola accompanied with their recommendation letter from Blumentritt had met Norfenfals, one of the
greatest novelists in Europe during that time. Then they met two good friends of Blumentritt named Masner and
Nordman.

DANUBE
Rizal and Viola ride a river boat to see the beautiful sights of Danube River and noticed that the passengers are using
paper napkins during meals which is more hygienic and economical.

LINTZ

SALZBURG
They travelled overland from Lintz.

MUNICH
They sojourned for a short time to savor the famous Munich beer.

NUREMBERG
Oldest cities of Germany and they saw the horrible torture machine used by the Inquisition.

ULM
They visited the cathedral which was “the largest and tallest” in all Germany
STUTTGART

RHEINFALL
They saw the most beautiful waterfall of Germany.

SCHAFFHAUSEN, SWITZERLAND
They crossed the frontier to Schaffhausen and stayed in this city from June 2 to 3, 1887.

LAUSANNE
They had a sightseeing in this city.

LEMAN
They ride a little boat crossing the Leman Lake to Geneva.

GENEVA
Rizal conversed with the people in Geneva in three languages because they were linguists- French, German and
Italian. Then, Rizal treated Viola a blow-out and they spent fifteen days in Geneva. In June 23, they parted ways.

On June 27, 1887, he reached the “Eternal City” and also called the “City of the Caesars.”

VATICAN
On June 29th , the Feast Day of St. Peter and St. Paul, Rizal visited for the first time the Vatican, the “City of the Popes”
and the capital of Christendom.

FIRST HOMECOMING, 1887-88

CALAMBA
Returned to the Philippines in August 1887 and practiced medicine and lived the quiet life a country doctor. But his
enemies, who resented his Noli, presecuted him, even threatening to kill him.
