Reginella (roughly translated as a diminutive form of the word "regina", meaning "queen") is the queen of an alien civilization and a love interest to Donald Duck. They love each other, but their different responsibilities keep them apart.

Background[]

Donald is deep-sea diving when he is captured and taken prisoner by alien ducks who live in a bubble under the sea. Reginella understands that he will never be one of them and decides to send him back to the surface. Donald thinks that the experience was a dream, but then sees the medallion that Reginella gave him as a token of love. Donald then sadly throws it in the sea.

Reginella later finds the medallion thrown by Donald, and all her feelings toward him return in her mind. Meanwhile her people's scientists tell her that her home planet is going near the earth for a limited period of time, so they can go back home. Reginella urges the scientists to build a rocket so they can return home. The rocket is almost ready, but to finish it they need an electronic piece easily available on the surface. So all the citizens of her civilization make a contribution so she can purchase it. Reginella buys the part, but while she is crossing a park to return to her people she finds Donald, their respective feelings suddenly emerge again and they escape in a chalet in the outskirts of Duckburg.

Meanwhile Pacificus is getting slowly away, so Reginella's people try to return home without their queen, but because this causes some discord between them the machines refuse to work, and to make matters worse, their protective bubble is crumbling and starts to fall apart. Reginella hears on the radio about some strange happenings around the Silent Bay (where her people live) so, moved by sense of duties, writes a farewell letter to Donald and returns home to her people.

Duty, time, fate, all tends to divide us and indeed it does, but...sentiment knows no border and join us as if I had my hand forever hold to yours . Farewell!
―Reginella's letter

She appears for a third time on Paperino e il matrimonio di Reginella (1987) (Donald Duck and Reginella's marriage).

During Reginella's absence her planet Pacificus (where her people can't use physical violence) was enslaved by the army of the evil Bingo. Upon Reginella's arrival, Bingo falls in love with her and wants to marry her, but after Reginella indignantly refuses, he imprisons her in a tower and forces her to watch the people being whipped while being in slavery. Reginella agrees to marry Bingo if she can get her people to gather at once. During the gathering, she secretly chooses someone to go to earth and get the help of Donald, so all of the citizens make contributions. He informs Donald of the situation, and the two of them return just in time to avoid the marriage. Donald, thanks to his salt-loaded arquebus, kicks out Bingo and his army. Donald is acclaimed as a hero and a new age of peace and serenity seems to start for Pacificus. Finally, Donald and Reginella can be together and they hope to stay together forever. But Donald's actions inspired violence in the inhabitants of Pacificus, especially the young ones, who have started playing with wooden toy rifles. So Reginella sadly decides to send Donald back home while he's sleeping to preserve her people's purity and gives him a letter. Upon waking up in his own home, Donald reads the letter and sadly decides to burn it, hoping to forget about her.

The fourth official story where she appears is called Reginella e la minaccia terrestre (Reginella and the earthling menace). Reginella has to decide whether her planet should remain in the same galaxy as Earth, or change routes. Meanwhile, on Earth, a travel agency is suffering an economical crisis, so they send an employee to space to find a new destination. He discovers Pacificus and the fact that a day on Pacificus is equivalent to just one second on Earth. The owner of the travel agency builds a tourist village on the planet, much to the inhabitants' disapproval. Donald, thanks to a loan of 21,000 dollars given to him by his uncle Scrooge, reaches the planet. Reginella succeeds in making Donald director of the vacation center, making a peaceful coexistence between the two peoples seem possible. Everything seems to go well, and Donald and Reginella can stay together again, but suddenly some inhabitants of Pacificus start to get sick. Reginella discovers that the cause of the illness is the earthlings' presence, but she doesn't want to put Donald in danger, so she uses a tool to scare all the earthlings away. Only Donald remains and wants to ask Reginella for information, but finds out that by using the tool, Reginella consumed a lot of her energy and is little more than a shadow. Donald is sent away and Reginella orders her people to move her planet away from Earth.

The fifth official tale and the (at moment) the last of the saga is named Paperino, Reginella e il temibile Vampirione (1994) (Donald Duck, Reginella and the fearful Vampirione). After Reginella seems to have finally found tranquility, her planet is once again raided by another alien race, this time from the planet Vampirio, ruled by Vampirione. Reginella again asks Donald for help, but Donald is forced to accept a duel challenge which could result in the destruction of the entire planet. Donald fights but Vampirione cheats, so Reginella uses what little energy she has left to grant Donald his victory and, in doing so, collapses. Donald is sent home so Reginella's condition won't get any worse, and uses a special chemical to forget what happened.

In The New Reginella in Topolino 3431 (2021), Reginella suddenly regains her memories of her times with Donald and this time the relationship issue between them is no longer a problem. Even so, Donald decides to return to Earth because he is needed there and his love for Daisy is stronger.
