Soon enough, we'll meet in your world. If you can survive what's next... Your survival is the key to my return.
―Kronos confronting Percy[src]

Kronos is the main antagonist in the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. He is the Titan of Time and is the father of all the gods, making him the grandfather of Percy Jackson.

Background[]

Personality[]

Kronos is a sinister, megalomaniacal being who has a strong hatred towards his progeny. He is devious, clever, and a master manipulator, despite his imprisonment. He seems to take great joy in seeing those suffer and has a slight sense of humor, albeit dark and cynical.

Physical appearance[]

So far, Kronos has only appeared in dreams in a very simple form, resembling a ragged, emaciated man and carries a lantern with him.

Powers and abilities[]

Kronos, like the other gods, is immortal and most likely has enhanced powers. He is also shown with the ability to mentally communicate with people through dreams and in people's heads. Being the Lord of Time implies he can control the flow of time itself.

Role in the series[]

The Lightning Thief[]

Many years ago, Kronos fathered numerous children that would become great gods in their own right. Worried that they would overthrow him, he proceeded to devour them to prevent their uprising. His son, Zeus, tricked him into drinking a potion that caused him to vomit all his children back up. He was soon imprisoned in the Pit of Tartarus, located in the Underworld, where he has remained into modern times.

Kronos, having the ability to feed off of negative energy, managed to make contact with Luke Castellan, the son of Hermes. Sensing that he was angry at the gods, he fed into his hatred and hatched a scheme to help him escape his prison. Luke would steal Zeus' Master Bolt and pin the blame on Poseidon, or at least one of his forbidden offspring. That being Percy Jackson, whom Kronos would also taunt within his dreams.

Kronos would put his plan into motion, but it would ultimately end with Percy returning the Bolt to Zeus and him outing Luke as the real thief who fled Camp Half-Blood, still devoted to Kronos' cause. Despite Percy besting his plans, Kronos saw that there was potential for him to still be effective in his release and promised to see him someday soon.

The Sea of Monsters[]

Kronos appears once more to Percy in his dreams where the young demigod is surrounded by dead capers. Percy later mentions to Annabeth Chase that unlike previous times, the person under the cloak was not Kronos, but a woman, who Annabeth realises is Thalia Grace.

When Percy confronts Luke on the Princess Andromeda, he finds him having placed the Golden Fleece on Kronos' tomb as Luke wants to use it to free Kronos. Kronos later speaks to Percy and tells him of the prophecy, quoting "a halfblood of the eldest gods shall reach 16 against all odds, and see the world in endless sleep", before Percy interrupts and takes the fleece with him.

Later, Kronos is confronted by Luke for not telling him about the possibility of the fleece healing Thalia. Furious at being questioned, Kronos uses his powers to torture Luke until he obeys. He then orders him to prove his loyalty to him and only him by letting go of his mercy and compassion and join his army in the raid of Camp Half-Blood, by burning it to the ground, but most importantly, to kill the son of Poseidon.

Trivia[]

  • Prior to Nick Boraine portraying him, Kronos was portrayed by Robert Knepper in the second live-action film, and Ryan Knowles (who also played Chiron, Poseidon, Hades, and Medusa) in the Broadway musical.
  • Nick Boraine previously starred in Jonathan E. Steinberg's previous series Black Sails as Peter Ashe.
