Role in the series[]
The Lightning Thief[]
Clarisse is the daughter of Ares and an unidentified woman. She had spent most of her time at Camp Half-Blood where her and her half-siblings all inhabited the cabin worshiping her father. She had gained a reputation for being somewhat of a bully towards the other campers, yet still managed to gain some respect towards Luke Castellan of the Hermes cabin, mostly because of the sacrifices he had to make.
When Percy Jackson first entered the camp, Clarisse immediately targeted him and found his claim of defeating the Minotaur ridiculous, despite Percy admitting that it was off the cuff. Clarisse would come to blows with him by trying to give him a swirlie in the restrooms, only to get blasted back by the toilet water, unknowingly summoned by Percy.
When the kids played capture the flag, Clarisse and her siblings immediately went after Percy in an effort to force him to retract his claim of defeating the Minotaur. They fought with, Percy managing to hold his own against Clarisse. He accidentally breaks her spear, angering her immensely, but before she could do anything else, the game was over. She was later among the many campers considered by Chiron to join Percy on his quest for the Master Bolt, with Annabeth Chase chosen instead.
While Percy, Annabeth, and Grover Underwood were away, Clarisse's entire cabin began to suspect the other campers of stealing the Bolt, causing all the campers to take sides in the argument. Unbeknownst to her, Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and Luke suspected that she was the thief.
When the heroes returned from their journey, everyone celebrated the success, except seemingly for Clarisse and her siblings her simply looked at Percy in silence, though this could have been her way of congratulating him. Percy ultimately realized that Clarisse wasn't the thief, but Luke instead, exonerating her.
The Sea of Monsters[]
Clarisse and her army take out a Laestrygonian Giant that infatuated the Camp barrier saving Percy and Annabeth. Unfortunately she takes her army and tries to attack Tyson too because he is a Cyclops after being ordered by Tantalus to kill him. Thankfully the god Poseidon claims Tyson as his son and is therefored allowed in the camp.
Later Clarisse arrives in the chariot race where she meets Percy and Chris Rodriguez where she boasts to Chris she is going to win and tells Percy that he is supposed to be in lockdown. She and one of her half-brothers would later compete with her leading the Ares chariot and attacking the Poseidon chariot with Percy and Tyson on it. The race would soon be interrupted by the attack of the Stymhalian Birds but Clarisse was the last one still racing, which would cause Tantalus to choose her to lead the quest to the Golden Fleece and the choise to pick 2 campers as her questmates. She was initially reluctantly going to pick Annabeth and Percy but Annabeth wanting to protect Percy convinced her to pick Chris Rodriguez. Due to a chain of events Percy, Annabeth and Tyson at the behest of the god Hermes journeyed on the quest without permission thus forcing Clarisse to pick new questmates, deciding to go alone instead.
Trivia[]
- In all prior adaptations, Clarisse is depicted as being white with dark hair. This is the first time she is depicted being of mixed-ethnic background. However, she retains her brown hair and eye color from the books.
- Prior to Dior Goodjohn portraying her, Clarisse was played by Leven Rambin in the second live-action movie (she was absent in the first film), and Sarah Beth Pfeifer (who also played Mrs Dodds/Alecto, Katie Gardner, and Bianca Di Angelo) in the Broadway musical.
- According to Walker Scobell, Dior Goodjohn was physically taller than him at the beginning of filming, which suited her description in the book. By the end of filming, Scobell had a growth spurt and towered over Goodjohn, forcing the crew to film her at angles.
- Clarisse's background is never fully established in the books, so Goodjohn invented a full backstory for her. Clarisse doesn't remember much about her mother, except that she was "gentle and sweet and kind and... the complete opposite of [Ares]". She came from Arizona and most likely first arrived at Camp Half-Blood when she was eight and stays there full time.[1]
