This article is about the character from Percy Jackson and the Olympians. For the character from Hercules, see Chiron.

Pay them no mind. When you're ready to hear what the gods have in store for you, they'll tell you. I believe in you. And I believe you'll be needing this. Hang onto that. 'Tis a mighty instrument.
―Chiron giving Percy Riptide[src]

Chiron, also known as Mr. Brunner, is a supporting character in the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. He is the mentor to Percy Jackson and his friends.

Background[]

Personality[]

Chiron is a very reserved, calm, and authoritative individual. He is shown to be very kind, wise, and helpful to those who need it, especially Percy Jackson whom he clearly has a strong attachment towards, which is fitting as he is technically related to him and the rest of the campers. Contrary to how some may see him, he is not devoid of fun and does have a witty and playful side to him, especially with Dionysus whom he seems to reluctantly consider a friend. Chiron has a strong attachment to the children and is willing to put his life out for them.

Physical appearance[]

Chiron resembles a bearded African-American male with white hair. He usually dresses in fine clothes. His lower half resembles that of a brown horse, with his left back leg sporting a brace that nurses an injury from Hercules having shot him with a poison arrow. When disguised as Mr. Brunner, he hides his horse half in a wheelchair.

Role in the series[]

The Lightning Thief[]

Many years ago, Kronos ate his own children until Zeus made him eat a rock that caused him to spit them all out. He was imprisoned and the gods worked together to make sure that he never escaped. The gods proceeded to make children all over the world. Chiron opted to help run a summer camp, Camp Half-Blood, for all the lost demigod children who needed a place to train. He was accompanied by the bitter Dionysus, or Mr. D as everyone called him, and helped create new heroes.

At some point, Chiron discovered Percy Jackson and his mother Sally Jackson. While he was aware that he was a demigod, he was uncertain of his lineage, but sensed potential in him. Under the guise of the wheelchair using Mr. Brunner, he and the satyr Grover Underwood went undercover at Yancy Academy to keep an eye on him. Grover ended up becoming fast friends with Percy while Chiron took on a mentor-like role towards the young demigod. They were caught off guard by the appearance of Alecto who was disguised as the pre-algebra teacher Mrs. Dodds. The two were unable to detect her due to the Mist. Chiron and Grover were forced to gaslight Percy into believing that it was all in his head.

Sometime later, Percy would learn the truth and Grover took him to Camp Half-Blood where Chiron revealed his true centaur self to the former. He proudly showed Percy around the camp and had him get used to his surroundings. Due to not knowing his parentage, he placed Percy in the Hermes cabin where he befriended Luke Castellan and Annabeth Chase and made enemies with Clarisse La Rue.

Chiron, Mr. D, and Grover all learn that Sally, who was presumed to have died, is actually alive and well in the Underworld. While Grover wants to tell Percy, Chiron and Mr. D tell him not to as Percy still has much to learn and did not want to get his hopes up. Once Poseidon claimed Percy, Chiron reveals that Zeus' Master Bolt had been stolen and that Percy is considered the culprit as he plans to go to war with Poseidon. Grover finally tells Percy the truth about his mom and he accepts the quest.

Chiron later assembles the best campers to go on the quest with Percy, with him ultimately choosing Annabeth and Grover as his companions, something Chiron found abrupt, but amusing. He remains at the camp where he tended to the children when the war among the gods began to ramp up. In the end, Percy, Annabeth and Grover returned successfully after their quest where Chiron greeted them warmly. Unfortunately, Luke is revealed to have been the Lightning Thief and he flees. Despite this, Chiron praises Percy for his determination and welcomes him to return to camp next year.

The Sea of Monsters[]

The following year it is revealed that Chiron is no longer the head of the camp and the role is now overtaken by Tantalus. Annabeth calls Chiron who is in Miami with other centaurs and tells her not to inform Percy of the great prophecy, but Annabeth does not want to lie to her friend and tells Chiron this, but he tells her he must keep it a secret anyway.

After the death of Tantalus, Chiron is reappointed to his position as head of the camp, where he greeted by Percy and his friends. Then Chiron apologizes to them for having to lie to them as he reveals he saw what actually happened to Thalia as he was there when the Furies attacked but when he tried to shoot them down with his arrows Zeus had already turned them to dust with his thunderbolts. He also saw the thunder god transforming Thalia into a tree to keep her bound at camp. Zeus then told his half-brother to lie to Luke and Annabeth about everything saying it was the Furies that killed her and that he had to turn her into a tree to save her. Chiron also tells to Percy that he might not be a child of the prophecy just before Thalia wakes up.

Trivia[]

  • In all prior adaptations, Chiron is depicted as being white with brown hair, just like in the books. This is the first time he is portrayed as being African-American. Additionally, the books describe Chiron's horse half of being that of a white stallion. Most adaptations, including the Disney+ series, make it brown.
  • Prior to Glynn Turman playing him, Chiron was played by Pierce Brosnan and Anthony Head in the first and second films, respectively, and Ryan Knowles (who also played Poseidon, Hades, Medusa, and Kronos) in the Broadway musical.
  • According to the showrunners, the brace on his left back leg nurses an injury from Hercules having shot him with a poison arrow, something they plan to explain in later seasons. This brace was later incorporated into his book counterpart in Wrath of the Triple Goddess; Percy claims he had never noticed it until after the events of The Blood of Olympus because of his constant questing and general inattentiveness.
  • Like Chiron, Glynn Turman is an experienced equestrian who runs his own summer camp, teaching children and teenagers about important life skills. On-set, Turman rides a horse, Palone, while wearing blue pants so the visual effects artists can edit out his legs and the horse's head and neck.
    • Additionally, Palone also portrays Blackjack.[1]
  • Chiron training young demigods mirrors Philoctetes doing the same with Hercules in the 1997 film. Like Phil, Chiron is half animal and half human.
