The alligator was created for the America Sings attraction at Disneyland in the Tomorrowland section where they were was placed in the "Modern Times" sequence where he could be seen in the song, "See 'Ya Later, Alligator" which opened on June 29, 1974. While the alligator was moved to the Disneyland version of Splash Mountain, the alligator animatronic was repurposed as the "Hitchhiking Alligator".

As of 2020, Splash Mountain was announced for closure to retheme it into a Princess and the Frog-inspired attraction in order to remove references to Song of the South due to controversy surrounding the film which the attraction was based on. Therefore, it is currently unknown what will replace the alligator animatronic in the Disneyland version. The Disneyland version of Splash Mountain permanently closed on May 31, 2023.
