Things to do: 'Casey at the Bat' operetta, ¡Somos Worcester! shares local Latino history
The mighty Casey on the stage
A musical staged reading of Worcester composer Stephen Murray's mini opera "Casey at the Bat," based on Worcester writer Ernest Lawrence Thayer’s famous 1888 poem of the same name, has become an annual event presented by the 4th Wall Stage Company and the Worcester Historical Museum. Murray's musical work uses Thayer’s entire poem but also expands the story to include Casey’s wife, Dora Mae, a young lad who idolizes Casey, legendary umpire Foghorn Bradley and a crowd of enthusiastic baseball fans. Local Latino history, straight from the source
The Latino History Project of Worcester has worked for more than a year to compile photos, objects, documents and other pieces that tell the long history of Worcester's many different Latino communities. That history will be on display to the public starting on June 6, when the ¡Somos Worcester! community exhibit opens at the Worcester Historical Museum. The gallery housing the exhibition will open at 4:30 p.m., and the Latino History Project will present an overview of the project at 5:30 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. reception. ¡Somos Worcester! will be on display at the museum until Oct. 15, so those interested in local history can learn about Worcester's past through friends' and neighbors' stories all summer long. Evenings on the water
If you're yearning to spend some time on the water as the summer begins, why not give paddleboard yoga a try? Every Thursday evening in June, SUP Yo Adventures, a company that teaches stand-up paddleboarding and organizes nature retreats, will hold a paddleboard yoga class on Lake Quinsigamond. The 75-minute class will start with a paddleboard lesson and then move out onto the water and into a series of yoga poses on top of the boards. According to SUP Yo, some people find that yoga on the water can make for a better core workout, as "the extra balance required by being on the water intensifies the yoga routine." Boards, paddles, anchors and life vests are provided, and participants should bring swimsuits, comfortable yoga clothes, a towel and a water bottle. (MT)
