Deciduous or sub-evergreen shrub or small tree with short trunk, broad, irregular crown of many branches, and numerous crowded, very small leaves.

Toumey Oak probably has the smallest leaves of all native tree oaks. While local in distribution, it is not rare. It is named for James William Tuomey (1865-1932), the U.S. forester and botanist, who discovered this species in 1894.
