This is a workspace for RDF calendaring work, starting with emphasis on representing iCalendar (RFC 2445) in RDF. The main result so far is:

RDF Calendar - an application of the Resource Description Framework to iCalendar Data W3C Interest Group Note 29 September 2005 by Connolly and Miller
This report discusses an effort to apply the Resource Description Framework (RDF) to iCalendar data in order to integrate calendar data with other Semantic Web data such as social networking data, syndicated content, and multimedia meta-data. We demonstrate the effectiveness of a test-driven approach to vocabulary development and we discuss a number of social as well as technical issues.

The schema and test data live here; we're using the ESW Wiki for use cases, meeting summaries, notes on calendar applications/user-agents, documenting emerging semantic web patterns and the like.

This workspace stems from a discussion at the calendaring workshop in October in Bristol.

Development

While we have started to use the ESW Wiki for usage notes and such, the following are still maintained in this workspace:

for the original namespace/schema:

we have the ical schema (in RDF/XML, RDF/n3). The RDF/XML version was derived from the iCalendar spec at one point; I'm not sure what state it's in now. I'm also not sure what state the RDF/n3 version is in.

conversion tools
- ical2rdf.pl maintained here, as well as a service by MK based on a slightly modified version
- some Java code (GPL) ( readme). It uses Daniel Resare's GPLed mime-directory parser.
- icalparser sourceforge project based on code from Event Sherpa
for the newer timezones-as-datatypes schema:

we have the ical schema (in RDF/XML). It's derived from the iCalendar spec in two steps:
1. we run rfc2445.txt thru slurpIcalSpec.py to get an XHTML version of the iCalendar RFC, with relevant structures marked up.
2. we use webize2445.xsl to transform the XHTML markup to RDF/RDFS/OWL statements.

conversion tools
- fromIcal.py reads .ics files and generates .rdf. make from-test checks that it's working.
  toIcal.py goes the other way. It depends on fromIcal.py and on some python modules from swap.

At the Bristol workshop, we agreed, roughly...

we announce all changes to the schema www-rdf-calendar
if anyone screams, within a week or so, we'll back out the changes (for further discussion)

If the last modified dates below are more than a few months old, active developments have likely ceased. If things ever actually stabilize, we'll change this status message.

Some details (such as the address of the workspace) were refined in discussion of 19 December.

We'll integrate contributions made to the www-rdf-calendar mailing list on a best-effort basis.

The public domain tz/zoneinfo database used in open source libc implementations has been converted to .ics format via an Olson -> VTIMEZONE Converter. We ran those files (taken from evolution debian package, Version: 1.2.1-3, which uses libical) thru ical2rdf.pl and put the results under the tzd/ directory. For example, America/Chicago. We give the timezone component a name distinct from the RDF document; e.g. http://www.w3.org/2002/12/cal/tzd/America/Chicago#tz

Meetings

We meet occasionally in the #rdfig IRC channel on freenode (formerly OpenProjects). Meetings are announced to www-rdf-calendar (archives); the IRC logs and weblogs generally serve as meeting records.
