Bristol has an international airport, and train and bus stations with fast(ish) connections to London airports and other centres in England and Wales.

Trains run from Heathrow to Paddington every 15 minutes: the journey takes 15-20 minutes and costs �12-14 single.
Trains run about every 30 minutes from London Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads. You can check times on the Railtrack site. The cost is between �30 and �70 return depending on times (you can check prices and book using the Train Line. The train takes between one and three-quarters and two hours. You can buy tickets on the train itself if you don't mind paying full fare. Please keep your ticket because they often check them at the major stations when you get off, as well as checking them on the trains.
Bristol Temple Meads station is a little way out of the city. It is easy to get a taxi at the station and it costs �5-7 to the University or Redland.
GoByCoach.com provides service from Heathrow, which takes 2-3 hours depending on traffic, departing about every hour and a half, from all terminals, and costs �30. You arrive at Marlborough Street Bus Station which is very central - about �4 to the University area or Redland, �10-15 to Hewlett-Packard. There are taxis at the back of the station.
The airport is a �15-20 taxi ride from central Bristol, though you can get a Bristol Flyer Bus for �6 return. If you get a taxi from the airport, there's a monopoly there - you have to order a taxi from the desk in departures.
The following hotels are available (there may be others too), including several in central Bristol (near the University or Redland) which have pubs, restaurants etc close by.
You could also try the Visit Bristol site (example search). Look for something in Cotham, Redland or Clifton if you want to be central
