Katy Perry Has No Answer on Dr. Luke, But She Can Tell You About Having a Baby

Still confused why Katy Perry would make a song about female empowerment with an alleged abuser? Don’t expect her to clear anything up on Call Her Daddy. Perry sat down with Alex Cooper to chat about her new album, 143, and to some surprise, Cooper actually asked Perry the biggest question about the album: Why did she work with Dr. Luke? Perry last worked with the producer on 2013’s Prism before Kesha accused him of abuse. Though he’s since settled a defamation lawsuit against Kesha, fans have been disappointed in their renewed collaboration. Perry told Cooper that Luke “was one of many collaborators that I collaborated with” — true! — before pivoting to talking about motherhood. And uh, we’ll let her take it from here:

“The reality is it comes from me. The truth is I wrote these songs from my whole life going through this metamorphosis. And he was one of the people to help facilitate all that — one of the writers, one of the producers. And I am speaking from my own experience. Like, when I speak about ‘Woman’s World,’ I speak about feeling so empowered now as a mother, as a woman. Giving birth, creating life, creating another set of organs: A brain! A heart! I created a whole-ass heart! And I did it! And I’m still doing it, and I’m still a matriarch, and feeling really grounded in that, that’s where I’m speaking from. And so, I created all of this with several different collaborators — people that I’ve collaborated with from the past, from Teenage Dream era, all of that.”

She’s no sister, but she sure is a mother! But come on, did you really expect Perry to atone for working with Luke weeks before her album comes out, and did you really expect that to happen on Call Her Daddy? It’s not like this is the Witness livestream.
