There’s making peace with your mortality and then there’s being amped to die because it means fewer years of President Trump. Dick Van Dyke has joined the latter camp. When asked about the upcoming second Trump administration by the Daily Mail, Dick Van Dyke said, “Fortunately I won’t be around to experience the four years.” The Mary Poppins actor is set to celebrate his 99th birthday in December. Earlier this month, Van Dyke endorsed Kamala Harris on social media and likened this election to the political climate of 1964, when he gave a speech at an event for Martin Luther King Jr. Van Dyke recited the speech from ’64 — written by The Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling — saying, “Hatred is not the norm. Prejudice is not the norm. Suspicion, dislike, jealousy, scapegoating … none of those are the transcendent facets of the human personality.”

“There will be moments of violence and expressions of hatred and an ugly echo of intolerance,” Van Dyke’s speech continued, “but these are the clinging vestiges of a decayed past, not the harbingers of the better, cleaner future.” Despite now being grateful for the sweet release of death, Van Dyke remains somewhat optimistic about the future of America. When asked by the paparazzo who cornered him for the Mail if the future looks bright for America, Van Dyke replied, “I hope you’re right!”
