In hindsight, calling their last album Memento Mori should’ve been a tip-off. Dave Gahan isn’t sure he’ll bring Depeche Mode’s music to the masses ever again, suggesting in a new NME interview that he and his bandmate, Martin Gore, are done with their recording career. “Martin and I have talked. We actually saw each other recently and it was really nice,” Gahan explained. “We had a really nice time without any work or show pressure. I actually did ask Martin if he’d been writing and he was like, ‘Nah!’ That’s normal — especially when you’ve worked intensely for a couple of years. It takes a while. Wait and see.” As a jumbled punctuation mark, he added: “I wouldn’t rule out as getting together at some point but it’s not on the cards at this point.” Gahan’s uncertainty comes after an extensive world tour in support of the release of 2023’s Memento Mori, which was their first album after the unexpected death of founding keyboardist Andy Fletcher. At the time, the decision to continue as a duo in the studio and on the road was attributed to honoring Fletcher with what “he would have wanted.” And what he would have needed?
