I Love Judith Light’s Favorite Red-Carpet Pose

As with most things that involve Judith Light, the best parts of Netflix’s The Politician are the parts that involve Judith Light. She doesn’t show up until the last episode of the first season, in which she’s introduced as the speaker of the New York State Senate, who happens to be polyamorous and work with Bette Midler (both fabulous things to do). The conceit of revealing Judith Light’s character only right at the end of the season feels like a way to make sure I, specifically, keep watching the show in its second season, which is both rude and a well-played move from Ryan Murphy. But the good news is that because Judith Light is in that one episode of The Politician, and because of Amazon’s Transparent musical finale, Judith Light has shown up on a lot of red carpets recently, and Judith Light kills it on red carpets.

She’s developed a whole repertoire of fabulously campy poses that she deploys as if she’s arrived at a fashion shoot. It’s like she’s decided to embrace the concept of “Judith Light,” TV guest actress extraordinaire in air quotes, and as one of my friends pointed out, her approach to the carpet has only gotten more extravagant. Specifically, as I discovered paging through a Getty Images search of Judith Light (a relaxing experience, I recommend), she has perfected one specific pose. Here it is:

She turns her head toward the camera, over her left shoulder, catching a glimpse of it as if she’s surprised that a camera would be here (on this red carpet? how strange?).

Judith Light lures you in with a little secret, perhaps a surprise she’s going to reveal — but later, after all this attention as died down.

For the Judith Light pose to work, you really need to have some good statement jewelry to accessorize it. Don’t try it at home.
