Anyone familiar with the American autumnal tradition of “punkin chunkin,” a competition in which pumpkins are hurled as far as humanly possible, can also imagine the absolute devastation a punkin chunkin could bring if there was some kind of mechanical failure. The Science Channel has officially pulled a three-hour special on the sport, which is organized by the World Championship Punkin Chunkin Association, after an unnamed person was badly injured on-set earlier this month. Returning after a two-year hiatus, the special would have also aired on the Discovery Channel. Per Variety, Delaware’s Cape Gazette reported that a 39-year-old female producer was in critical condition after being struck in the face by a metal plate that detached from an air cannon. “In light of the unfortunate incident at the Punkin Chunkin event on November 6, Science Channel will not air Punkin Chunkin as originally planned,” a Science Channel spokesperson said in a statement. “We are sending our hopes and prayers for a full recovery to the injured woman, her family and loved ones.”
