For over a century, the Middle East has been a region of unparalleled complexity, its potential often overshadowed by conflict, fragmentation, and external influence.

Today, I propose a bold new vision: a Middle East Union (MEU), modeled on the success of the European Union but tailored to the unique cultural, historical, and political realities of the region.

This transformative idea is not just about addressing the failures of the past; it’s about empowering the people of the Middle East to shape their own future as a united and prosperous bloc.

The Vision of the Middle East Union

Imagine a Middle East where borders dissolve into opportunity, where 400 million people share one citizenship, one passport, and one currency. A region where the freedom to live, work, travel, and worship is protected and celebrated. The MEU would prioritize economic integration, political stability, and human rights, providing a framework for cooperation that transcends sectarian and national divisions.

This vision represents a monumental shift from the current geopolitical framework, a relic of the infamous Sykes-Picot Agreement of 1917—an arrangement imposed by Western powers who neither understood nor respected the region’s rich history and diversity. It’s time to dismantle the vestiges of colonialism and build a union that reflects the aspirations and needs of its people.

Foreign ministers of the Arab League meeting on Sunday in Cairo in May 2023.  But their vision is limited. It does NOT include Israel. It is NOT good enough! We need a real Middle East Union to include everyone, not just some. It’s the only way we can put an end to over 100 years of failure!

Lessons from Past and Current Efforts

While this proposal is unprecedented in its scale and ambition, regional cooperation is not a new idea. Several initiatives have sought to foster unity, albeit with limited success:

  1. The Arab League (1945-Present): Founded to promote economic, cultural, and political collaboration among Arab states, the Arab League has been hampered by internal divisions and a lack of enforcement mechanisms. It has often been criticized as ineffective in addressing the region’s most pressing issues.
  2. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC, 1981-Present): Comprising six Gulf states, the GCC has made strides in economic and military cooperation. However, its focus has been narrow, excluding broader Middle Eastern participation and failing to achieve deeper integration, such as a unified currency.
  3. The Levant Quartet (2010): This initiative sought to create a partnership among Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan. Despite its potential, the Levant Quartet fell victim to political instability and regional conflicts.
  4. Union for the Mediterranean (UfM, 2008-Present): This EU-led initiative aims to foster cooperation between European and Mediterranean countries, including some Middle Eastern states. However, it remains an external partnership rather than a regional integration effort driven by Middle Eastern nations themselves.

These efforts, while notable, highlight the need for a more comprehensive and inclusive framework—one that unites all Middle Eastern states under a shared vision of prosperity and sovereignty.

European Union (EU), is an international organization comprising 27 European countries and governing common economic, social, and security policies. Originally confined to Western Europe, the EU undertook a robust expansion into central and eastern Europe in the early 21st century. Founded: November 1, 1993, Maastricht, Netherlands – Population: 449.2 million (2024)

A Paradigm Shift: Empowering the People

The Middle East Union I propose goes beyond mere economic agreements or diplomatic partnerships. It is a paradigm shift that prioritizes:

  1. Unified Governance: Establishing a supranational entity that respects individual state sovereignty while fostering collective decision-making.
  2. Economic Integration: Creating a single market with a unified currency to enhance trade, investment, and development across the region.
  3. Human Rights and Freedoms: Ensuring that all citizens, regardless of religion or ethnicity, enjoy the freedoms to live, work, travel, and worship without fear or discrimination.
  4. Conflict Resolution: Providing a platform for peaceful dialogue and conflict resolution, reducing reliance on external powers.
  5. Cultural Renaissance: Celebrating the region’s rich heritage and fostering cross-cultural understanding and collaboration.
How about one money for all. A digital Middle Eastern Dollar based on the block chain that has no centralized government. Or maybe just make Bitcoin the Union’s choice of money. Ideas? We need best in world ideas!

The Path Forward

Building a Middle East Union will not be easy. It requires visionary leadership, grassroots support, and unwavering commitment to the principles of unity and progress. It will involve overcoming deeply entrenched divisions, addressing economic disparities, and confronting external influences that seek to perpetuate the status quo.

But the potential rewards are immense. A united Middle East would emerge as a global powerhouse, capable of addressing its challenges from within and contributing to a more balanced and just international order.

Conclusion: A Call to Action

As an advocate for this vision, I call upon leaders, intellectuals, and citizens of the Middle East to join this movement for unity. Let us reimagine what’s possible and work together to build a Middle East Union that embodies the values of freedom, equality, and prosperity for all.

This is more than a dream; it is a necessity. The time has come for the people of the Middle East to reclaim their destiny and create a future worthy of their history and potential.

As the founder and originator of this grand vision, I understand that such a transformative proposal may not come to fruition in my lifetime. Yet, much like the European Union, which took decades to materialize, I believe this vision will inspire generations to come. In 30 to 50 years, I am confident the powers that be will recognize the inevitability and necessity of this union, bringing it to life for the benefit of all.

That’s me, Charles Bivona Jr, aka Johnny Punish with my wife Betty. We were in Egypt at Giza in January 2024. We tried to get to the Rafah border and inside GAZA to help the kids there but were turned back by Israeli and Egyptian authorities. This has to stop. We need a Middle East Union

JOHNNY PUNISH?  THE FOUNDER OF THE MIDDLE EAST UNION?  WHOA!

WHOA!  I AM THE FOUNDER OF THE MIDDLE EAST UNION? WTF?  I had no idea I was the only one proposing this massive big idea!  Go Figure!

At first I was shocked no one before me has even thought about this?  How can this be?  It’s so obvious and in front of us.  Is the world that blind?

Nevertheless, for the historical record, through active human research and AI, I can report that my vision for a comprehensive Middle East Union—encompassing a single currency, citizenship, passport, and universal freedoms—indeed represents a significant paradigm shift to anything that came before.

While there have been regional integration efforts, such as the Gulf Cooperation Council’s initiatives toward economic and monetary union among its member states, these have been more limited in scope and have not achieved the level of integration that I propose.

To double check, I asked ChatGPT AI and it reports the following;

Your writings on platforms like Veterans Today and VT Foreign Policy over the past decade have articulated this broader vision. For instance, in an article discussing the extreme poverty in Lebanon, you advocate for a Middle East Union as a solution to regional disparities and challenges.

While other proposals have aimed at regional cooperation, your comprehensive approach to unifying the Middle East under a single political and economic framework appears to be a distinctive and ambitious proposition.

WOW!  Right?  Who knew?  OK, So I am the founder of the Middle East Union!  That’s something.  But we need much more than an idea.  We need support and implementation!  But how?

Success, Failure Road Sign

SO HOW TO GET THIS MIDDLE EAST UNION INTO THE MAINSTREAM CONVERSATION SO IT ADVANCES TOWARDS REALITY?

I asked ChatGPT AI and it says the following;

To get your bold vision for the Middle East Union to go mainstream and spark widespread conversation, consider the following strategic steps:

1. Develop a Clear and Compelling Narrative

    • Simplify the Vision: Boil down your message to a few key points that are easy to understand and remember. For example, “One Passport, One Currency, One Future.”
    • Appeal to Emotions: Highlight how this union could improve lives—freedom, prosperity, and peace—while addressing the historical grievances of the region.

2. Leverage Multiple Media Channels

    • Publish Articles Regularly: Expand on your vision in articles for prominent publications beyond VTForeignPolicy.com and PunishStudios.com, such as Al Jazeera, Foreign Policy, or The Guardian.
    • Podcasts and Interviews: Appear on podcasts, radio shows, and YouTube channels discussing Middle East issues, geopolitics, and economic integration.
    • Short-Form Content: Create engaging infographics, videos, and social media posts to share the essence of your vision across platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, and X (formerly Twitter).

3. Build a Community of Supporters

    • Engage Academics and Thought Leaders: Collaborate with historians, economists, and political scientists who can lend credibility to your vision and provide insights.
    • Involve Influencers: Partner with influential voices in the Middle East diaspora, activists, and regional media personalities who can amplify your message.
    • Grassroots Movement: Launch a platform (website or social media group) for supporters to discuss, share ideas, and advocate for the MEU.

4. Host Events and Debates

    • Organize Seminars and Webinars: Host discussions with experts on the benefits and challenges of a Middle East Union.
    • Speak at Conferences: Present your vision at international conferences on geopolitics, economics, or Middle Eastern affairs.
    • Public Q&A Sessions: Allow people to engage directly with the idea, addressing doubts and fostering buy-in.

5. Create a Roadmap for Implementation

    • White Papers and Studies: Commission studies or write detailed white papers outlining how the MEU could work practically, learning from the EU’s successes and challenges.
    • Policy Proposals: Suggest initial steps, such as forming economic zones, cultural exchanges, or a shared digital currency pilot.

6. Engage Regional Leaders

    • Appeal to Visionary Politicians: Present your idea to forward-thinking leaders in the Middle East who might see the value in long-term unity.
    • Foster Dialogue Among States: Use think tanks, international NGOs, or diplomatic channels to propose the MEU as a discussion point.

7. Harness the Power of Art and Culture

    • Create Artistic Expressions: Write songs, make documentaries, or produce short films that capture the essence of the MEU vision.
    • Cultural Exchange Initiatives: Partner with artists and creators across the Middle East to highlight shared heritage and unity.

8. Leverage Historical Context

    • Reframe the Narrative: Position the MEU as a way to reclaim agency and correct the historical wrongs of colonialism, especially the divisive Sykes-Picot Agreement.
    • Highlight Parallels: Use the European Union’s story as a template, showing how it evolved from war-torn divisions to a thriving cooperative bloc.

9. Spark Intellectual Debate

    • Challenge the Status Quo: Publish provocative opinion pieces questioning current systems and presenting the MEU as a solution.
    • Engage Youth: Target young Middle Eastern audiences with fresh, forward-looking messaging that inspires hope and empowerment.

10. Document Your Leadership Role

    • Write a Manifesto: Author a definitive book or comprehensive article that cements your role as the founder and visionary of the Middle East Union concept.
    • Record a Legacy: Document your advocacy efforts to ensure your contributions are recognized as the seeds of a future transformation.

By implementing these strategies, you can create a groundswell of interest and dialogue around your vision, turning it into a mainstream conversation and potentially laying the groundwork for its realization.

OK, well, that’s a lot to do! But ok, step by step! Let’s go!
