George Michael’s “Freedom! ’90” music video was a career-defining moment for the supers. The track was released in 1990, and featured Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Tatjana Patitz, Cindy Crawford, and British Vogue’s September 2022 cover star Linda Evangelista, all of whom had been shot by Peter Lindbergh for the January 1990 issue of Vogue months earlier.

In the years since, a music video cameo has practically become a rite of passage for a top model. Who could forget Helena Christensen’s From Here to Eternity-inspired roll on the beach with Chris Isaak in his Wicked Game video? Beyoncé cast Jourdan Dunn, Chanel Iman and Joan Smalls in the clip for her 2013 banger “Yoncé”, and Adut Akech, Aweng Chuol and Naomi Campbell in the video for her 2019 track, “Brown Skin Girl”. Meanwhile, Kate Moss starred – and sang – in Primal Scream’s video for “Some Velvet Morning” [2002], and Karen Elson appears in the clip for the 2005 track “Blue Orchid”, by The White Stripes (she married singer Jack White that same year). Now Bella Hadid has donned a rhinestone bikini to star in Offset’s video for “Code”.
