This is hopefully the last football thread for the next two years. Please try to keep all footballing talk to this thread in the next few days. I suspect that Belgium will beat England to take third place during the penalties, while France will beat Croatia by 2-1 or something like that. At this point,... Read More
So as I said I'm supporting Perfidious Albion over the Ustaše today, but convinced by Marko Marjanović's apologetics, I will settle back into neutrality once the Finals roll by. I have a feeling that the Eternal Anglo will win today, anyway (and yes, I wrote this sentence before their goal at 5 minutes). But at... Read More
My apologies, it was all my fault. So long as I was castigating the Russian team, it kept winning. But today I got too clever by half and jinxed it all. This implicitly assumed Russia would beat Croatia and thus nullified my previous prediction: Go frogs, go waffles, go whatever it is that Croatians eat.... Read More
Wiltshire pair 'poisoned by nerve agent' Alexander Mercouris has written at length about the outsized impact of British individuals, especially in the intelligence services, on pushing the Russiagate conspiracy theory to annul Trump's stated desire for rapprochement with Russia. With the Trump-Putin summit in Finland coming up on July 16, the timing is certainly impeccable.... Read More
Untold billions of dollars spent on new football stadiums. Lavish spending on football players. The hiring of some of Europe's most expensive and prestigious coaches. Results? Russia is 45th in the football Elo rankings Russia is 70th in the FIFA rankings The Russian team has never been weaker in its entire history. My guess is... Read More
Since nobody knows anything, as Alexander Mercouris points out, I haven't bothered following this closely. Still, I suppose it's big enough that I should post something about it. This comment from for-the-record seems not entirely implausible: What seems eminently clear is that whoever did it knew that this would be attributed to the Russians, and... Read More
Russia is surprisingly mediocre at the beautiful game. What makes this at first sight all the more surprising is that Russia is hardly a slouch when it comes to many other sports. It is consistently in the top three at the Summer Olympics, beaten out only by the US and China with their much larger... Read More
UEFA should outsource Euro promotion to the Chinese in perpetuity. [youtube= PS. My money is on Italy tomorrow. Edit: 0-4, ouch...
So yesterday morning I was sitting at the bar with my homies, in a Russian sailor vest and with a big Russian flag draped round our table. It was 0-0. Whatever. Russia had mounted several good attacks, and was bound to score eventually, and even if it didn't, as long as the Poland - Czech... Read More
One might have thought that football is one of those few places where politics can be left at the door. At least that's the position of UEFA who constantly talk of the game's potential to build bridges, etc. However, consider the following litany of attacks. First, it is looking into punishing Russia for displaying the... Read More

About Anatoly Karlin

I am a blogger, thinker, and businessman in the SF Bay Area. I’m originally from Russia, spent many years in Britain, and studied at U.C. Berkeley.

One of my tenets is that ideologies tend to suck. As such, I hesitate about attaching labels to myself. That said, if it’s really necessary, I suppose “liberal-conservative neoreactionary” would be close enough.

Though I consider myself part of the Orthodox Church, my philosophy and spiritual views are more influenced by digital physics, Gnosticism, and Russian cosmism than anything specifically Judeo-Christian.
