Robin Hanson is one of the central people in this entire rationality/effective altruism network, along with Scott Alexander and Eliezer Yudkowsky. For him to be canceled, by a vote of 6 vs. 1 out of eight at that, for a set of modestly controversial thought experiments - that is, the basis of all philosophy -... Read More
I realize this is sarcasm, but let's entertain this seriously anyway. General Ripper (LeMay, McArthur), Dr. Strangelove (Edward Teller, John von Neumann), etc. - they all sort of had a defensive point in terms of utilitarian ethics. Here is the choice they'd have faced in the late 1940's-mid 1950's, when America's nuclear stockpile soared into... Read More
The nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is honestly one of the single most effectively altruistic actions in all of human history. By helping persuade the Japanese to surrender (they were open to doing that with preconditions, but that was hilariously at odds with the military balance by mid-1945), the Americans helped make the world a... Will be going off to my dacha this week so probably not much poasting. This week's events have been dominated by the Charlotteville clashes, and the resulting cyberpurge of the Alt Right and mass felling of Confederate monuments. Now comes news of the resignation of Steve Bannon. It will certainly be fun to see the... Read More
Protesters shut down UVic Effective Altruism club screening of a TED Talk by Peter Singer, the utilitarian philosopher and animal rights activist who has argued that carnivorous animals should be holocausted for the greater good*. Here is a summary of my ideas relevant to Effective Altruism: Intelligence is central to explaining the wealth and poverty of nations, so a good understanding of it is central... Read More
Effective altruism (EA) is the fairly simple idea that in charitable giving as in financial investment, you should aim to put your money where it would do the most good - be it earning the highest returns, or helping the maximum number of people. It is a laudable enough goal, though the ideas behind it... Read More

About Anatoly Karlin

I am a blogger, thinker, and businessman in the SF Bay Area. I’m originally from Russia, spent many years in Britain, and studied at U.C. Berkeley.

One of my tenets is that ideologies tend to suck. As such, I hesitate about attaching labels to myself. That said, if it’s really necessary, I suppose “liberal-conservative neoreactionary” would be close enough.

Though I consider myself part of the Orthodox Church, my philosophy and spiritual views are more influenced by digital physics, Gnosticism, and Russian cosmism than anything specifically Judeo-Christian.
