I have been a long-term China bull since I began blogging. Proof (2008). A lot of what the Western media was writing about China were based on Sinophobic fantasies that had no correlation with reality. Just to be clear, I am still a China bull, at least in the sense that I'm sure its GDP... Read More
Chinese protectionism/censorship (they only allow 34 Hollywood movies a year) has helped incubate a domestic film industry. As Richard Hanania points out, citing a study by James McMahon, that as of now, 9 out of 10 of the highest grossing films in Chinese history are domestic, all released in the last few years. Something like... Read More
Biden and Putin will meet in Geneva on June 16. Speculation has been rife that Biden will try to draw Russia away from its deepening relationship with China. This makes patent sense - even American strategists have long realized that China isn't just a much bigger Mexico, and in fact constitutes the one threat to... Read More

In 2015, I attempted to quantify the military power of the world's states with an index of Comprehensive Military Power. You can read the post, including the detailed methodology, here. Since then, its conclusions - broadly speaking, that China and Russia had about a third of US military power in the mid-2010s, while the next-tier... Read More

The GOD DANG CHEETO ORANGE MUSSOLINI will soon be out of the White House. As such, it's now the Chinese taking over from the Russians paying Afghans to kill American soldiers in Afghanistan. In this "summary" post on Corona 2020, I will cover some of the following. Where will Chinese GDP end up: At ~US level, or 2-3x the US level? Very important question - after all, it will determine whether the world will remain unipolar (if China ~= US, the latter will remain dominant thanks to its alliance system and soft power) or "bifurcated" between a US-Western sphere and a Sino-centric... Some Berlin-based organization called the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi) has compiled a global "Academic Freedom Index." So a Chechen refugee who was brutally persecuted by evil Russian occupiers and forced to flee to France recently beheaded a French teacher for triggering him with Mohammed cartoons. I collected some official polls about Russian opinion towards China last year here. But what do Russian nationalists in particular think? Interesting map of European approval of China, though being mostly from 2018/19 (see Sources) this was from before the coronavirus. But I don't expect the general patterns to have changed, the countries already disposed to think well of China wouldn't have had their expectations shattered - possibly, even the converse - while the more Sinophobic... According to my CMP index, China should currently outclass India by a factor of more than three (figures for after 2015 are based on projections but this index don't change cardinally over the course of a few years). There is one, up until now relatively Sinophile, major European nation that will likely receive a massive influx of Chinese immigrants over the next decade - possibly as many a million - and radically transform as a consequence. In my review of Kroeber's book on The Chinese Economy, I identified why the CPC was treating the Hong Kongers with kid gloves (relatively speaking): Now it appears that China has taken the decision to reintegrate Hong Kong ahead of schedule; in the process, it will lose its position as a privileged entrepot within the... @Enopoletus has found some rather interesting anecdotes from an old book, Thirty Years in Moukden, 1883-1913 by Dugald Christie. There is nothing magical about East Asians and containing epidemics. I am a blogger, thinker, and businessman in the SF Bay Area. I’m originally from Russia, spent many years in Britain, and studied at U.C. Berkeley.
One of my tenets is that ideologies tend to suck. As such, I hesitate about attaching labels to myself. That said, if it’s really necessary, I suppose “liberal-conservative neoreactionary” would be close enough.
Though I consider myself part of the Orthodox Church, my philosophy and spiritual views are more influenced by digital physics, Gnosticism, and Russian cosmism than anything specifically Judeo-Christian.
