J.P. Feyereisen was fully healthy this year after shoulder surgery wiped out his 2023 season. He rode the up-and-down express between the Dodgers and Oklahoma City during the 2024 season.

The Dodgers acquired Feyereisen in a December 2022 trade withe the Rays, and he spent all of last season rehabbing his shoulder. This year he was healthy, and had four stints in the majors, including making the opening day roster in Seoul in March.

Feyereisen’s season in the majors was one of extremes. In three of his four stints with the Dodgers he pitched only once, and allowed at least three runs in each outing, totaling 10 runs and 10 outs recorded.

In between, he pitched seven games in May and didn’t allow a run, with seven strikeouts against only two walks in 7⅔ innings.

Time on the roster can be intermittent for those on the lower end of the bullpen depth chart, and such was the case for Feyereisen, who cleared waivers and was sent outright to Triple-A on July 3 when the Dodgers added left-hander Matt Gage to the 40-man roster to avoid losing him via an opt-out clause. Gage was traded to the Mets for cash four days later, as the roster churn continued.

Feyereisen had over three years of service time and had the right to refuse the outright assignment to the minors, but instead he accepted and finished out the year in Triple-A. During his time with Oklahoma City, Feyereisen had a 5.48 ERA in 33 games, with 33 strikeouts and 13 walks in 42⅔ innings.

Game of the year

During his scoreless May, Feyereisen pitched in his highest-leverage situation with the Dodgers all season, entering the 10th inning with a two-run lead over the Giants on May 13 in San Francisco. He worked around a walk to record the final three outs, earning the save.

Feyereisen was the fifth different Dodger to record a save in 2024, a group that swelled to 14 during the regular season to tie the 2021 Rays for most by one team in a season. Feyereisen also saved three games for that Tampa Bay team.

Roster status

Because of the requisite three-plus years of service time and that he was sent outright to the minors during the season, Feyereisen exercised his right to free agency once the season was over, doing so on October 10.
