When is Boxing Day 2024?

Boxing Day takes place the day after Christmas on Dec. 26. This year it falls on a Thursday, and will be the last opportunity of 2024 to save on big-ticket items such as tech, appliances and more.

When did Boxing Day start?

Boxing Day began as a 19th-century tradition of gift-giving among British nobility and their staff when employees would receive “Christmas boxes” filled with leftover food, cash or gifts (hence the name Boxing Day). It has since evolved into a major shopping event in the U.K., Canada and other Commonwealth countries.

These days, you’ll likely find retailers offering deals on clothing, electronics and overstock seasonal goods, with many people using the sale as an opportunity to save on wishlist items they didn’t receive as holiday gifts.

What to expect when Boxing Day shopping

Traditionally Boxing Day sales were limited to Dec. 26, offering 24 hours of deals and discounts. In recent years, however, many retailers have extended their sales into a week-long event. Many sales begin early and sometimes stretch until the end of December – expect to find most deals within the 20 to 60 per cent off range.

Like last year, deals will start before Dec. 26. Some early Boxing Day deals already available include:
