Installing Ultra-Thin Exterior Lights
Depending on your home’s wiring and where you choose to install your new lights, the process may look a bit different. However, here are the basic steps Caron used when replacing a standard floodlight with ultra-thin recessed soffit lights.
Step 1: Disconnecting Old Fixtures
To safely remove old fixtures:
- Ensure the power is off at the breaker.
- Remove the fixture cover, if applicable.
- Test the wires with the voltmeter to ensure the power is off.
- Disconnect the wires, noting their connections.
- Unscrew and remove the old fixture.
- If necessary, patch any holes or imperfections in the mounting surface
Step 2: Creating Openings for New Fixtures
Use the appropriate tools to create openings for the new fixtures, then do the following:
- Measure and mark the areas where the new light fixtures will go based on your home’s architectural features or illumination needs.
- Select a hole saw or keyhole saw that matches the fixture size.
- Wearing safety glasses, carefully cut the opening following the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Clean up any debris from cutting.
Step 3: Running Electrical Wires
This is where it may be prudent to hire a licensed electrician, as you want to ensure that all wiring is safe and up to code. As demonstrated in the video, Caron had to run one line of 14-2 electrical wire to the first and second fixture and then a second line to the third fixture. Your home’s needs may differ, so if you need to do more than just swap out fixtures, call a pro.
Step 4: Making Electrical Connections
Carefully connect the wires for each fixture by doing the following:
- Strip the ends of the wires.
- Connect black to black (hot), white to white (neutral), and ground to ground.
