How To Makeover a Rattan Chair

Worn-out finishes can make these vintage treasures look dated and tired, but with a simple DIY makeover using spray paint, you can transform a rattan chair into a modern, eye-catching accent piece.

Tools and Materials Needed To Refurbish a Rattan Chair

Gather the following items before starting your project:

• Cloth or rags

Preparing Your Rattan Chair for Painting

Before diving into the painting process, you should prepare your rattan chair. A clean, undamaged chair will give you better results and a long-lasting finish. 

Cleaning the Chair

Start by cleaning your rattan chair to remove any dirt, dust, or debris that may have accumulated over time. Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to gently clean the grooves and crevices of the rattan. Wipe down the entire surface with a damp cloth to remove any remaining dirt or residue. 

For heavily soiled chairs, use warm water and a mild detergent to clean the rattan more thoroughly. Allow the chair to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Repairing Damaged Areas

Examine the chair for any damaged rattan pieces. Minor damages, such as small cracks or splits, can often be repaired with wood glue. Simply apply a small amount of wood glue to the damaged area, press the split rattan together until the glue sets, and wipe away any excess glue with a damp cloth.

For larger repairs or replacements, consult a professional to ensure the structural integrity of the chair.

Choosing the Right Paint

Consider these factors when selecting your paint:

• Opt for a spray paint specifically designed for use on multiple surfaces, including wicker and rattan.

Painting Your Rattan Chair

With your chair cleaned and your paint selected, it’s time to begin the transformation process. Follow these steps to achieve a professional-looking finish on your rattan chair.

Setting Up Your Work Area

Before you start painting, choose a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors or in a garage with open doors. Lay down a drop cloth to protect the surrounding area from overspray, and elevate the chair on scrap blocks or a box to expose the bottom edges for painting. Put on protective gear, including gloves and a mask, to ensure your safety during the painting process.

Applying the First Coat

When applying the first coat of paint, follow these techniques for the best results:

1. Shake the spray paint can thoroughly before use.
2. Hold the can 10–12 inches away from the chair’s surface to avoid drips.
3. Apply a light first coat using sweeping horizontal motions.
4. Start and stop each spray pass beyond the edges of the chair for even coverage.
5. Follow the curves and lines of the rattan when painting detailed areas.

Adding Subsequent Coats

To achieve a rich, even finish, you’ll need to apply multiple coats of paint. Allow the first coat to dry for a few minutes, and apply the second coat within an hour of the first.  Spray in varying directions to ensure coverage of all angles and sides of the rounded rattan.

You can apply additional coats as needed for full coverage, allowing each coat to dry before adding the next. Work in thin, even layers to avoid drips and achieve a smooth finish.

Finishing Touches and Styling Your Rattan Chair

Once your rattan chair is fully painted and dry, it’s time to add the finishing touches that will complete your modern tropical look.

Allowing Proper Drying Time

Patience is key when it comes to achieving a durable finish. Allow the paint to dry fully for at least 24 hours before handling or using the chair, and avoid placing heavy objects or sitting on the chair during this time to prevent damage to the fresh paint. If possible, let the chair cure in a warm, dry area to ensure the paint fully sets.

Sealing the Paint

For added durability, apply a clear spray sealer designed for outdoor use. This will protect your chair against moisture and UV rays. Follow the same method as painting, applying light, even coats and allowing each to dry before applying the next.

Maintaining Your Painted Rattan Chair

• Clean spills immediately with a damp cloth to avoid staining the painted surface.
