Welcome to 2004 Week

The world we live in is, in so many ways, 20 years old. Let’s go back and see how we got here.

We’ve spent the past week covering the tech world as it existed two decades ago. We’ve looked back at the creation of things like Gmail and Facebook, and tried to figure out how they changed the way we live our lives. We’ve looked at moments like the DARPA Grand Challenge, the Grokster Supreme Court case, and Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction to try to assess their legacies big and small. We’ve dug up old gadgets like the Motorola Razr and the iPod Mini to see whether 20 years of gadget innovation has actually gotten us anywhere. And that’s just the beginning of what went down during 2004 Week here at The Verge.

If you want to read, watch, and listen to everything we published this week, check out the gorgeous 2004 Week hub. (Trust me: click the toggle.) For technical reasons none of us like and only a few of us understand, the system we use to build these amazing 2004-era stories doesn’t allow us to include onpage comments.

So treat this post like an open thread for all things 2004! Share your photos from that year and tell us all your favorite memories, things you miss, questions about our stories, and everything else on your mind as we all wind back the clock to the year of “Mr. Brightside,” Livestrong bracelets, Uggs, and The Simple Life. We’ll be in the comments, too, ready to reminisce. Thanks so much for coming on this wild journey with us.
