A taxi rammed into a cow in Ma On Shan on Thursday evening, with the cow having later succumbed to heavy injuries.
The incident happened at around 6.50 pm on a long stretch of straight road on Sai Sha Road near Sai Sha Cafe.
The taxi was said to have approached at high speed as the cow was crossing, leaving the front of the taxi completely deformed after impact.
The cow, breathing its last, struggled to get back up after taking the hit, and succumbed to heavy injuries at around 7.40 pm.
The news came as a shock to local residents and volunteers who cared for the cow known as “Ka Chi.”
One of the volunteers, Kei, said cows in the area would only stroll along the roads, adding it is impossible for the taxi driver not to have spotted the animal from afar - contradicting the taxi driver’s statement that the cow “had dashed onto the road.”
Kei also said a collar mounting a GPS tracker on Ka Chi snapped on impact, indicating the taxi must have been driving at a very high speed.
