Windows can brighten a space and make you feel more connected to the outdoors, but smudges and streaks can quickly ruin the feeling. Additionally, dirt, grime, and even mold that builds up on your windows over time can actually scratch and damage the glass.
There are many reasons why it's important to clean your windows regularly, but you must do so during the right conditions to keep them in their best shape. We consulted the experts to find out when is the best time to clean windows.

When Is the Best Time to Clean Your Windows?
While one might assume that the best time to clean their windows is simply when the streaks and dirt become too conspicuous, there are actually ideal times of year and day to clean your windows.
"The best time to clean the inside of your windows is whenever they aren’t subject to direct sunlight," says Hugh Williams, a home improvement expert at Magic Window. Sunlight can dry up your cleaning solution too quickly, which results in streaks on your windows.
Weather conditions matter even more when you're cleaning the outside of your windows.
"Stay away from extreme cold and heat as high temperatures render glass fragile and cleaning agents useless," says Andriy Neborak, the founder and CEO of Luxury Cleaning NY.
Neborak suggests waiting for a cloudy day with mild temperatures, preferably above freezing, to clean the outsides of your windows.

How Often Should You Clean Windows?
Most window cleaners recommend hiring a professional to clean your windows twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. However, smudges, water droplets, and other dirt and grime will appear far more often, especially if you live in a high-traffic area or your windows are exposed to excessive rain, pollen, or other debris.
To keep your windows clean and protect them from scratches, you should clean them on an as-needed basis, following the methods outlined below.
How Should You Clean Windows?
Again, most experts recommend hiring a professional to clean your windows twice a year, but if you notice dirt and smudges building up in the interim, it's time to give them a good, thorough clean.
Clean the inside of your windows first, using your favorite glass cleaner or a mixture of water, vinegar, and a few drops of dish soap.
"After cleaning the inside, it becomes easier to spot any streaks or residue on the outside," Williams says. "Clean top to bottom and wipe with a dry microfiber cloth to avoid streaks."
Next, it's time to clean the outside of your windows.
"I recommend following a similar process when cleaning the outside of windows," Williams says,. He suggests using a hose for initial rinsing, then following with a microfiber cloth or squeegee attached to an extendable pole.
For accessible windows, Neborak recommends using a bucket with clean, warm water and a mild dish soap, applied with a large window cleaner brush. Finish with a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth or a squeegee to remove the excess water and prevent streaks.
Additional Tips for Cleaning Windows
- Be sure to wipe away any dust or cobwebs with a microfiber cloth before you use your glass cleaner.
- Apply a cleaning agent to your microfiber cloth rather than directly to the window.
- Wipe down your windows with a microfiber cloth in circular motions.
- Don't forget to clean the corners and edges of your windows often to prevent build-up of dust.

Is it worth having windows cleaned in winter?
If you're hiring a professional, it's best to have your windows cleaned in the spring and fall. However, you'll want to clean your windows yourself on a regular basis to remove dirt and grime and prevent scratches. If possible, clean your windows when the temperature is in the 60s and when there is not direct sunlight.
