Why Have Uncovered Windows?
We're seeing a resurgence in uncovered windows as of late, and it's due to a variety of reasons. Victoria Holly, the founder of Victoria Holly Interiors, attributes this to the increased popularity of minimalist design, noting that even when people do opt for window treatments, they're quite simple.
Centuries ago when people would ornately dress their windows it was considered a sign of prosperity. Today, on the other hand, uncovered windows are seen as a sign of wealth, Holly says.
This is in part due to the fact that wealthier people can enjoy the benefits of uncovered windows—such as more sunlight and better views of the outdoors—without worrying as much about increased utility costs as a result.
Additionally, pricier homes may have higher quality windows that are more resistant to letting in unwanted heat or cool air, making it more feasible to leave panes uncovered without sacrificing comfort.
The decision to leave windows uncovered can also be a cultural practice and is more common in some countries or cities than others.

Benefits of Uncovered Windows
There are a number of benefits—both aesthetically and lighting related—associated with leaving windows uncovered. Below are some common ones to consider.
- Increased aesthetic appeal. Leaving windows uncovered makes it easier to admire their architectural details, like intricate panes or floor-to-ceiling designs. "When the window itself is a standout architectural feature, there’s no need to add additional fuss with window treatments that could distract from its beauty," Holly says.
- Increased natural light. Most people are eager to add more natural light to their home however possible, and leaving windows bare is one way in which to do so.
- More flexibility when decorating. When you don't have curtains dictating your design scheme, you can enjoy more flexibility. "Leaving windows uncovered can make it easier to blend more traditional furniture in a modern space, or more modern furniture in a traditional space, without the visual clutter of drapes or roman shades," Holly says.
- Cleaner design. Those who prefer a streamlined look will appreciate the absence of fabric around the windows, which results in a more sleek appearance.
- Unobstructed views. Without window coverings, there's no need to worry about fabric blocking your line of sight. "An uncovered window can frame a beautiful outdoor view better than one with drapes," Holly says.
Disadvantages of Uncovered Windows
- Minimal privacy and less security. You will not want to leave your windows uncovered if your space overlooks a neighbor's home or public building such as a school or office. The same goes with safety. If you live in a highly trafficked area, allowing all of your belongings to be on display may not be a wise decision.
- Unsightly views. If your home looks out at an unsightly area, keeping your windows covered may be in your best interest so that you're not viewing a pile of trash bins or dumpsters all day long, for example.
- Utility bills may rise in cost. Closing the curtains during the winter can help reduce heat loss by up to 10 percent, and doing so during the summer can help to prevent heat gain, which affects room temperature as well.
- A bare look. Sometimes, uncovered windows can cause a space to appear a bit bare. "To add depth, look for textured or patterned wallpaper for your walls which will help 'dress up' your windows without actually adding on window treatments," Holly says.
- Lack of lighting control. It can be nice to be able to draw your curtains shut as needed throughout the day to regulate light coming into your space. Without window treatments, you cannot adjust the natural lighting scheme in a space as easily.
Should You Leave Windows Uncovered?
The decision as to whether or not you should leave windows uncovered is ultimately a personal choice. Some people appreciate the airiness and more streamlined look that doing so allows. Others will feel uneasy about the lack of privacy and choose to cover theirs with traditional curtains or drapery.
As a compromise, some may wish to opt for sheer curtains that allow more natural light to stream in throughout the day while still providing a form of privacy. The key here is to forgo heavy, ornate drapery that may block views or overwhelm a room.
