6 Clever Tips for Creating a Cozy Nook in Any Corner of Your Home, According to Designers

Bedroom with reading nook

The Spruce / Jason Donnelly

Even though I already live in a small space, I always like to make my apartment feel even more snug by creating various nooks throughout my home. In my living room, for example, I've created a cozy reading nook by the window that features the comfiest striped accent chair, which I sourced via Facebook Marketplace, and a petite, round side table, which allows me to keep a drink, snack, or candle nearby at all times.

I think that any home, whether large or small, could benefit from a cozy nook or two, whether that's in your living room, bedroom, basement, you name it. It's nice to have a designated space in which to curl up and unwind, particularly on days when the weather outside is dreary and all you want to do is stay in and relax.

We asked designers to share their best tips for creating a cozy nook, read on to find out how to get started.

Don't Forget a Side Table

As I noted when describing my own cozy nook, a side table is key in order to be able to set down a hot drink, a book, or anything else you would like to keep within reach as you lounge.

Keep in mind that by no means do you need to opt for anything too bulky. A simple cocktail table can be an excellent solution in a small nook and will add a streamlined, sophisticated touch to the space.

Be Conscious About Your Lighting

Cozy nooks and harsh, ultra-bright lighting certainly do not go hand in hand. While you may need some type of light source—even a window counts—Andrew Franz, the founder of Andrew Franz Architect, suggests opting for ambient task lighting rather than severe overhead lighting.

If you're looking to take advantage of wall space within your nook, consider sconces, which make for an excellent option, as illustrated here.

There are so many styles and types of sconces to choose from making it easy to source fixtures that reflect your design aesthetic. Bring in various accent lighting to warm up your space.

Add Soft Touches

Soft, textural touches will take any nook from good to great. Amy Courtney, the founder of Amy Courtney Design, recommends weaving in fabrics including cotton, chenille, and silk throughout the space.

"For colder months, layer thicker materials and richer earth tones, and consider adding a heated blanket for extra warmth," she says.

Thoughtfully Select Seating

As you design your cozy nook, skip the ultra formal seating altogether.

"Comfort is key, so choose seating that invites you to sink in—a plush chair, bean bags, or even a soft blanket on the floor," Courtney says.

A nook is all about being casual and relaxed, so don't worry if your chairs lack a ton of structure.

Bring in Personal Touches

Your cozy nook is your place to unwind and take in your surroundings, so be sure to deck it out with accent pieces that you truly love.

"Personalize the space with items that inspire you, whether it's a favorite book, artwork, or anything that brings you joy," Courtney says.

In my own living room nook, I'm positioned right next to my built-in bookshelves, which contain dozens of my favorite coffee table books, various trinkets from travels, sculptural pieces, and so much more. Whenever I look up from what I'm reading and admire these pieces, they never fail to fill me with joy.

Keep the Area Clutter Free

While it's important to be surrounded by your favorite things, you won't want to invite a pileup of clutter into your cozy nook.

Be mindful to sort through items like loose mail, old magazines and catalogs, and the like, to avoid accumulating buildup. You'll be able to relax and enjoy your space much more fully when it isn't filled to the brim with stuff.
