Sleep cool with these ultra-soft and breezy sheets

Bamboo, rayon made from bamboo, or viscose made from bamboo are some of the hottest–okay, coolest–textiles right now in bedding, and they all boast one major trait: moisture-wicking properties. For hot sleepers, this sole perk of silky bamboo sheets is obvious. However, it's important to understand how these materials differ, so you know exactly what you're purchasing when shopping for bamboo sheets.

We've tested over 30 bamboo sheet sets from a variety of brands in The Lab and in our own homes for several months. While all bamboo sheets are generally absorbent and comfortable, their weave and texture can vary greatly.

Whether you prefer a silky-smooth sateen sheet, a soft and cozy jersey set, or a textured linen blend, we have options to suit every preference. Across the board, we best liked sheets that combined breathability with softness, and a durable construction that ensures long-lasting quality.

Editor’s Note: This list was updated in October 2024 to include new products that performed well in our at-home testing.

What We Like
  • 400-thread count and sateen weave

  • Breathable and good at dispersing heat

  • Great fit on our test mattress

  • Very durable and high-quality

What We Don't Like
  • Some shrinkage over time

  • Certain stains may linger

Of all the options we tested in The Lab and at home, our favorite was the Bamboo Bliss Resort Bamboo Collection Sheet Set, which stood out to us in terms of temperature regulation, quality, and texture. Like most bamboo sheets, these had a silky smooth texture, making for an extra cozy feel once we made the bed. The sateen weave and 400 thread count also added to the luxurious, high-quality feel.

Additionally, the fabric’s cooling power was especially impressive, as the sheets dispersed heat very well. Though they did get mildly warmer when we slept on them, they quickly cooled down after we got out of bed. They also fit the bed like a glove and didn’t budge throughout the night, despite our tossing and turning. However, they only come in queen- and king-size sets, which is somewhat limiting.

We also particularly liked how well these sheets held up over time. They easily handled the wear and tear of everyday use and proved particularly durable.

After six months, they still feel exceptionally soft and cool to the touch (our take: they’re a great summer sheet, or worth being added to a year-round rotation if you’re a hot sleeper), even after enduring constant rinse cycles. Coffee and oil stains came right out when we washed the bamboo material, though makeup left some residual staining.

In our testing, we also found the sheets shrunk in size, as they started shifting a bit more and rode up the mattress over time. Still, we highly recommend them, especially because of their unmatched softness and cooling properties.

Are Bamboo Sheets Really Made from Bamboo?

Bamboo sheets can be made from 100 percent bamboo fibers. However, it is quite common to see blends of different fabrics with bamboo, and as a result, it is important to read the label and materials before purchasing, depending on what you are looking for. If you are looking to get the most out of the absorbency of your bamboo sheets, you will want to make sure that it is not blended with something like polyester.

What We Like
  • Softens more with time

  • Silky, slippery feel

  • Highly durable

  • Great temperature regulation

What We Don't Like
  • Fitted sheet can tighten after a wash

  • Prone to wrinkles

Cozy Earth’s Bamboo Sheet Set is almost double the price of the other bamboo sheet sets in our list, but we found it justifies its higher price tag through its silky and luxurious feel as well as its ability to stay cool and regulate temperature.

The silky feel of these sheets is slightly different from true silk—think of it as an even softer sateen feel—so you won't feel like you're slipping off your bed at night. We loved how they didn’t show any signs of shrinkage or wear after washing, which was a bonus given we washed them in warm water, rather than the recommended cool water.

Wrinkles will appear as you use these sheets, but they seem more pronounced when direct sunlight hits them, and they may not be as noticeable on some darker colors. The fitted sheet also shrank slightly after the first wash, which made it slightly challenging to fit on the mattress. However, we didn’t notice any major shrinking after this first wash, and the tighter fit ensures the fitted sheet stays on the mattress.

After six months, these sheets held up well, getting softer with use and washing. Some loose threads have become apparent over time, but that is to be expected after months of nightly use and machine washing them on hot, despite the manufacturer’s instructions to wash them in cold water.

What We Like
  • Lightweight and cooling

  • Silky smooth texture

  • Quality, texture, and appearance holds up well over time

  • Great value at price point

What We Don’t Like
  • May not be warm enough on colder nights

  • Some loose threads and minor edge bowing on pillowcases

You can’t beat the quality and durability of the Sijo DOZ Bamboo Sheet Set, and we’re confident that this pick will remain a staple in your linen closet for years to come. In our testing, we especially loved its silky smooth texture. What’s more, we found its high-end feel remains consistent over time, even as our daily sheet set.

Its lightweight and airy construction is especially impressive—we sent these sheets home to a hot sleeper with night sweats, and we found were great for temperature regulation. The sheet set feels cool to the touch, maintaining a comfortable temperature throughout the night. However, on especially cold nights, we needed an extra layer to keep us warm.

We put these sheets to the test at home and were impressed by their durability. They effectively handled night sweats, maintained their pristine white color, and continued to feel luxurious after multiple washes. Plus, they fit our 8-inch mattress snugly.

Although we noticed a few loose threads upon arrival and minor edge bowing on the pillowcases post-wash, the sheet set’s overall performance and quality really stood out to us. Considering their price, we believe these sheets offer exceptional value, especially when compared to other sets we tested at a similar cost.

Material: Organic bamboo viscose | Weave: Sateen | Thread Count: 300 | Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king | Certifications: USDA organic, Eco Cert, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 | Care: Machine wash cold, gentle cycle, tumble dry low

What We Like
  • Very breathable

  • Holds up well over time

  • Wrinkle-free construction

What We Don’t Like
  • May be too thin for some

  • Some loose threads upon arrival

If you want an especially breathable sheet set, the Great Bay Home Bamboo Bed Sheet Set is a great pick. It’s especially lightweight and airy without sacrificing comfort.

Offering a nearly weightless feel with a thread count of just 90, we loved the sheet set’s breezy texture, which allowed for a lot of airflow. While this may not be for you if you prefer more substantial bedding, it’s one of our favorite lightweight options we tested.

We tested this sheet set during a heatwave in Iowa, and we thought they were a great addition to the bed, as they didn’t cause us to overheat. While these sheets aren’t necessarily cooling, their lightweight construction makes them great for temperature regulation.

These sheets have also held up well over time, with no signs of sweat, oil, or makeup stains lingering on the fabric during the testing period. Other than a few loose threads upon arrival, there were no changes in quality over time. We also loved how wrinkle-free these sheets were, as they looked great on the bed.

Material: 67% polyester, 33% bamboo viscose | Weave: Not listed | Thread Count: 90 | Sizes: Twin, full, queen, king | Certifications: None listed | Care: Machine wash cold

What We Like
  • Inviting, silk-like texture

  • Wrinkle-free, clean look

  • Very breathable

What We Don’t Like
  • Fitted sheet shifted slightly with tossing and turning

This low-maintenance, wrinkle-resistant sheet set looks great on the bed—and while its smooth, wrinkle-less appearance is one of its standout features, there’s lots more to love. Upon arrival, we really loved how soft and sumptuous these sheets felt. They feel inviting and wonderfully smooth against bare skin.

Although the sheets are lightweight, their overall quality is evident with no visible imperfections. These sheets maintained a comfortable temperature, even during especially hot nights. They felt cool and light, and our tester, a self-proclaimed hot sleeper, never overheated underneath them.

If you value a clean, neat-looking bed, then these are the sheets for you. They didn't get wrinkled after coming out of the dryer, nor did they get significantly wrinkled at the edge after several nights of sleeping.

These sheets also did not change in terms of texture or quality over time, and the white color still looks as good as new. Even with a dog sleeping on them, we were pleasantly surprised to find no stains or paw prints on the sheets. Although we noticed some shifting and bunching in the center of the fitted sheet during the night, we appreciated that the edges stayed securely in place.

Material: Bamboo rayon | Weave: Sateen | Thread Count: 300 | Sizes: Twin, queen, king, California king | Certifications: None listed | Care: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low

What We Like
  • Cozy, comfortable texture

  • Durable construction

  • Stretchy

What We Don’t Like
  • Not as cooling or breathable

  • Thin enough to see the mattress cover underneath

If you love the cozy and comfortable texture of jersey sheets, these ones from Cozy Earth are seriously next level. While jersey sheets are often associated with affordability, the Cozy Earth Bamboo Jersey Sheets elevate the experience, offering both familiarity and luxury.

These bamboo sheets don’t feel like other bamboo sheets we’ve tested—they have a stretchy feel, which keeps them securely on the bed. They also aren’t slippy or slick, offering a more cotton-like feel that resembles your favorite t-shirt.

Although the material itself is quite thin and lightweight, these sheets are very durable. We were impressed with the overall construction quality, and they’ve held up nicely over time and use. Even with lots of tossing and turning, these sheets aren’t showing signs of wear. That said, we don’t love that the sheets are sheer enough that you can see the mattress cover underneath.

Note that these bamboo sheets are not the most breathable or cooling option on our list. They warm up quite a bit when you sleep, which is great for colder temperatures but may not be ideal if you tend to sleep hot. We haven’t felt uncomfortably hot while using these sheets, though. Because of the bamboo fabric, they don’t hold onto heat like cotton jersey sheets do.

What We Like
  • Kept cool through a heatwave in long-term testing

  • Hold up well over time

  • Fitted sheet is roomy with good elastic

What We Don't Like
  • Some colors look inexpensive

Bampure Organic’s Bamboo Sheets really delivered in terms of cooling capabilities, making them a great pick for the summer heat (or year-round if you tend to sleep hot). They stayed nicely comfortable during a heatwave, proving hugely beneficial for keeping our body temperature regulated at night.

These sateen sheets feature durable stitching and envelope-style pillowcases, a major bonus in our book. After six months of testing, they maintained their silky, cozy, and lightweight nature. Additionally, we found they maintained their silky, cozy, and lightweight nature despite many washes.

We also love how wrinkle-free these sheets stay after a night of sleep. A stretchy band on the fitted sheet, which features 16-inch deep pockets, also provided a secure fit when we made the bed. We can see the elastic strap being especially beneficial if you’re using the sheets on a slimmer mattress, so you won’t feel the fitted sheet move underneath you at night.

It is worth noting, though, that while we found a lot of the color options to be aesthetically appealing with these sheets, some of the more saturated colorways do look less elegant. These bamboo viscose sheets are also OEKO-TEX Made In Green certified, meaning they’re produced using sustainable, socially responsible manufacturing processes.

Best Bamboo-Linen Blend

Quince Linen Bamboo Sheet Set

Quince Linen Bamboo Sheet Set

What We Like
  • Softer than pure linen

  • Very breathable

  • Holds up well over time

  • Lightweight but not flimsy

What We Don’t Like
  • Some stains may linger

While linen bedding is one of the most breathable options out there, the material tends to be quite rough upon arrival compared to other materials, often requiring a bit of breaking in before becoming soft. A bamboo-linen blend, such as the Quince Linen Bamboo Sheet set, eliminates the need for a break-in period, providing an immediately soft feel.

We’ve tested this sheet set in our homes for six months, and they’ve quickly become one of our favorites. The texture is very similar to traditional linen, but slightly silkier and softer. The sheets have a luxurious look and feel to them, and we love the high-quality construction.

We also appreciate how breathable and lightweight these sheets feel. We sent these sheets home to a hot sleeper, who says she uses these pretty much exclusively year-round.

Even after months of frequent use and multiple washes in our homes, we’ve noticed no changes in quality. That said, when testing these sheets in The Lab, we did notice the makeup stain lingered a bit. Otherwise, these sheets have proved to be exceptionally durable.

Material: Bamboo, linen | Weave: Not listed | Thread Count: Not listed | Sizes: Twin, full, queen, king, California king | Certifications: None listed | Care: Machine wash cold

What We Like
  • Rich, luxurious softness

  • Breathable weave

  • Quick-drying and moisture-wicking

What We Don't Like
  • Sweat stains visible on certain colors

  • Lose cool-to-the-touch feel over time

Bamboo sheets are typically always soft, but the silky softness and rich feel of Hush's Iced Cooling Sheet Set surpassed our expectations upon arrival. As soon as we felt these sheets, we knew they were high-quality and far softer than the average set. They're lightweight and feature a weave that keeps us comfortable throughout the night, letting in good airflow.

Best of all, they helped us stay dry as hot sleepers with excellent moisture-wicking properties and fast-drying material.

As we continued sleeping on Hush's luxuriously soft bamboo sheets for six months, we noticed the gray sheet set started to show sweat stains, forming a slightly brown outline on the sheet. If you do tend to overheat and sweat in your sleep, you may want to consider purchasing a darker-colored set.

Additionally, we also noticed the sheets lost their cool-to-the-touch feel over time. They become fuzzier and softer while losing a bit of slickness and smoothness. This wasn't a dealbreaker for us since we didn't consider these particularly temperature-reducing in the first place, but it's worth noting if you're a hot sleeper.

Ultimately, we still found ourselves loving the texture and comfort of these bamboo sheets after plenty of use, so they're still well worth considering. And if you're looking for extra-soft sheets, these are the winners in our book.

Final Verdict

Our favorite bamboo sheet set is the Bamboo Bliss Resort Bamboo Collection Sateen Sheet Set for its breathability, excellent fit, and multiple color choices. For a value-packed pick that holds up very well over time, consider the Sijo DOZ Bamboo Sheet Set (best durable).

How We Tested the Bamboo Sheets

At The Spruce, we've tested upwards of 200 different sets of sheets (34 of them bamboo-derived options) in The Lab to date, and we continually test the best sheets throughout the year so we can stay on top of industry trends and new products. While our methodologies can be individual to specific tests, there are a few key criteria we evaluate whenever we lab test sheets.

When testing the above bamboo sheets, we scored each set on its texture, assessing the feel of the fabric both before and after washing it. We also noted any quality issues, including any discoloration, loose threads, or snags in the material.

Another element of quality is how well the sheets fit on a bed—we note if each fitted sheet is tight-fitting or loose when putting it on a test bed, and we mimic tossing and turning to see if the sheets move or slip off the mattress’s corners.

To analyze the durability of the sheets, we conducted stain tests to see how different types of common stains (such as coffee, makeup, and oil) lifted from the fabric. Another test for durability includes rubbing sandpaper on the surface of the fabric and noting any loosened fibers or, worse, holes that appear.

Since temperature regulation can be a huge factor for many sleepers, we take a close look at the breathability of each sheet set. In recent rounds of testing, we have also assessed the moisture-wicking capabilities of the sheets as an additional indicator of breathability.

We’ve also conducted at-home testing, checking in with testers after six months to see how the sheets have held up against regular use and multiple rounds in the wash. All in all, we’ve spent over 19,000 hours testing sheets, so we’re confident that we know what to look for and what to recommend.

When Is the Best Time to Buy Bamboo Sheets on Sale?

Our bamboo sheet collection offers a diverse range of options, starting at $50 and going up to $345. Whether you're looking for a budget-friendly choice or a luxurious indulgence, we've got you covered.

We recommend paying attention to end-of-season sales that retailers offer after summer and winter holidays—Labor Day and after Christmas sales are good times to find discounts. Retailers and manufacturers typically want to clear out their inventory for fresh products, which results in them offering major discounts on off-season products.

Our Shopping Tip

How to Choose the Best Bamboo Sheets

Look for Bamboo or Bamboo Hybrid Materials

As we mentioned earlier, bamboo bedding products have strict requirements on how they must be labeled. You’ll most often see 100 percent bamboo, rayon made from bamboo, or viscose made from bamboo listed on a product label. Rayon and viscose made from bamboo—both of which are synthetic fibers—are more common than textiles made from actual bamboo fibers.

You can also find products that are a mix of rayon/viscose made from bamboo and cotton or even microfiber. We’ve included a few sheet sets in our list that are hybrid fabrics, including the Great Bay Home Bamboo Bed Sheet Set (polyester/bamboo blend), the Cozy Earth Bamboo Jersey Sheet Set (bamboo/spandex blend), and the Quince Linen Bamboo Sheet Set (bamboo/linen blend).

When it comes to purchasing bamboo sheets, it may seem confusing to see all of the different textiles listed as materials. However, understanding textiles can be simplified. Textile expert Deborah Young tells us that lyocell and rayon are both celluloses, but they come from different trees.

She adds that lyocell and Tencel are the same thing (Tencel is a specific brand that produces lyocell and modal fibers), though there is a shift in marketing where they are starting to refer to both of these materials as eucalyptus. Young also says that bamboo comes from a bamboo tree, Tencel and lyocell come from the eucalyptus tree, and modal comes from the beech tree.

On the subject of bamboo-derived fabrics, the FTC states: “Textiles can only be called bamboo if they are made directly from actual bamboo fiber. Textiles made from rayon (or viscose, which is the same thing) that was created using bamboo as a plant source may be labeled and advertised as ‘rayon (or viscose) made from bamboo.’”

The FTC has even cracked down on companies that have made unfounded claims about the source and eco-friendliness of rayon made from bamboo.

Consider the Weave for a Softer Sheet

Bamboo comes in a variety of weaves, with sateen being the most common one featured in our roundup. The sateen sheets on our list include Bamboo Bliss Resort Bamboo Collection by RHH Sheet Set (our overall best pick), the Sijo DOZ Bamboo Sheet Set (most durable), the Pom Pom At Home Bamboo Sateen Sheet Set (best wrinkle-resistant), and the Bampure Organic Bamboo Sheets (best cooling).

There are also knit and woven bamboo sheets, both of which come with their own set of benefits and drawbacks. Young says: “The knit is going to shrink more because knits always do, but knits are also softer and more cozy.”

That said, we love the Cozy Earth Bamboo Jersey Sheet Set (best jersey), which offers more of a soft and cozy feel rather than the typical slick and smooth texture that’s typical in bamboo sheets.

Keep Durability in Mind

When it comes to the durability of bamboo sheets, Young tells us to expect some amount of shrinkage. However, she adds there are preventative measures you can take. “Shrinkage comes from heat and water, so if you reduce the heat you’re gonna reduce the shrinkage,” says Young. “A certain amount of it will still happen in water, but it’s mostly heat.”

Young warns that bamboo “is not the strongest fiber.” We have found through testing that bamboo-derived fabric tends to be less durable than other materials (like linen and cotton) as it is such a soft material that it pills easily.

We recommend keeping this in mind when washing bamboo sheets and following specific manufacturer instructions. (This includes avoiding washing these in hot water.) Generally, we think it’s best to wash sheets weekly—or at the very least, every other week—to keep them fresh.

We found the median shrinkage for both length and width in our recent round of bamboo sheets testing (which included the Bamboo Bliss sheet set on this list, plus a handful of other sets not chosen for this list) was under 4 percent. Before putting together the methodology for this recent testing, we spoke with industry expert Diana A Wyman of American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists, who told us that 5 percent shrinkage is the average.

Beyond the shrinking potential, though, we tested a few options that really excelled in terms of fit. Particularly, our overall best selection, the Bamboo Bliss Resort Bamboo Collection by RHH Sheet Set, went on easily and stayed in place throughout the night. And for added security through additional elastic in the corners of the fitted sheets, we really liked the Bampure Organic Bamboo Sheets, our best cooling pick on this list.
