A storage bed we recommend on a colorful background

When you're short on bedroom space, you need to find creative ways to store linens, clothes, pillows, and other essentials. A storage bed can help you reclaim valuable space that would otherwise go unused without compromising on style or comfort.

The best storage beds balance durability with convenient, subtle storage solutions. We researched storage beds to find options for every bedroom, evaluating each for cubic feet of storage, weight capacity, quality of construction, and other factors.

The result? Our favorites include the best storage beds to fit every scenario and aesthetic, including platform beds, mid-century modern designs, contemporary designs, captains beds, and more.

What We Like
  • 4 pull-out drawers

  • Sturdy steel construction

  • Interchangeable headboard wingbacks

  • Thick, plush foam padding

What We Don't Like
  • Hook-style drawers, not rollers

Expand your bedroom storage space and create a cozy place to relax with the Losada Upholstered Storage Bed by Three Posts. We love how this bed blends classic styling and materials—like the linen-blend upholstery with tufting and diamond stitching, the modified wingback headboard, and the neutral color choices—with ample room to stash extra bedding, clothes, or other items.

You can even swap the wingbacks on the headboard, with both Deluxe and Giant options included (and with nicely plush foam padding, too). Four steel drawers sit underneath the bed’s platform, and their upholstered fronts blend in seamlessly, hiding your spare storage space.

We also like the durable construction of this roomy storage bed. The frame is built out of wood slats and steel, with a maximum weight capacity of 800 pounds, which falls within the typical weight capacity for storage beds on this list. Additionally, a mattress alone can give you just the right height and comfort for this bed, so there’s no need to purchase a box spring.

Installation and setup for this upholstered storage bed is pretty simple, and all of the tools required are included. However, it can take some time to get used to the style of underbed drawers on the frame. While most storage bed drawers pull out on rollers, this piece features hook-style drawers that hook into small fixtures at the top edges and slide along metal rails. You’ll want to make sure those hooks are properly attached for smooth and easy functionality.

Sizes: Full, queen, king | Storage: Drawers | Materials: Solid wood, manufactured wood, steel, foam, linen-blend fabric | Weight Capacity: 800 pounds

What We Like
  • Single large, divided drawer

  • Low profile

  • Durable reinforced frame joints

What We Don't Like
  • Drawer mechanism can be stiff initially

If you’re searching for a simplified storage bed with durable drawers, we like the Aversa bed from Raymour & Flanigan. It’s a bit different from many other drawer-style frames, as it features a single oversized drawer that pulls out from one side instead of multiple smaller drawers on both sides.

The smooth-rolling, full-extension drawer makes it simple to see and find everything you’re storing. Pop it open, and you’ll find dividers inside that make organizing all of its contents easy. Just note that for the first couple of uses, you may find the drawer’s bearings a little stiff; they should loosen up as you get the drawer moving.

When it comes to style, the wood frame’s cherry finish and sleek mid-century modern lines give this bed sophistication and elegance. Crafted from a mix of different woods and medium-density fiberboard (MDF), this frame is made sturdy thanks to its kiln-dried hardwood and reinforced joints, two details that enhance its durability and longevity. The MDF slats offer mattress support, too.

Sizes: Queen, king | Storage: Drawer | Materials: Hardwood, kiln dried wood, MDF board | Weight Capacity: 900 pounds (Queen)

What We Like
  • Easy-to-use lift mechanism

  • Multiple colors and sizes

  • Deep storage space for tall items

What We Don't Like
  • Time-consuming assembly

  • May require additional tools

The DHP Cambridge Upholstered Bed lets you stash your stuff and only see it when you need it. You can easily hide items underneath the mattress slats on this bed frame. Plus, thanks to the gas-lift mechanism, opening the storage space is easy even with a mattress on top.

It’s particularly great for rooms with limited space; unlike storage drawers, the lift mechanism prevents the need for side or foot clearance around the bed.

Additionally, with your mattress lifted, this bed will reveal a large storage compartment that’s about a foot deep. You can use this storage space to stash extra bedding, off-season clothing, or anything you don’t need to frequently access, like pillows for visiting sleepers. Best of all, we love the affordable price of this easy-to-lift bed; even the largest sizes are priced lower than many of the options on this list.

This platform-style bed comes with a tufted headboard and footboard, and you can choose from a variety of colors and fabrics, like a linen-style blend and velvet.

Additionally, while you’re putting this storage bed together, you may want to consider grabbing an extra screwdriver or wrench, as only a small Allen wrench is included. It does take time to build, but it can go faster if you have the help of a second pair of hands.

Sizes: Twin, full, queen, king | Storage: Lift-up | Materials: Not listed | Weight Capacity: 600 pounds (Queen)

What We Like
  • 5 drawers and a cubby

  • Solid wood construction

  • Built-in desk and nightstand

What We Don't Like
  • Mattress sits high

This isn’t your typical storage bed! Add the Cleary Captain’s bed from Pottery Barn to your teen’s room, and you’ll essentially have added several pieces of furniture in one: a bed, a dresser, a nightstand and a desk.

We love the versatility and durable construction of this small-space wonder. In addition to providing five roomy drawers, there’s also a small cubby built right in for storing books, electronics, and other items. The cubby space can also be used as a step to enter the bed.

Made from a mix of solid wood and MDF, this sizable storage bed is available in several stains and two smaller sizes, twin and full. Think through your space before purchasing, and make sure to measure carefully so you know if there’s room to open up all drawers, and comfortably sit at the pull-out desk.

You’ll also want to make sure your tween or teen is comfortable climbing into this bed, as the mattress does sit high; however, with all of its functionality, it’s a workhorse of a piece.

Sizes: Twin, full | Storage: Drawers, cubby | Materials: Solid wood, MDF | Weight Capacity: 500 pounds (Twin)

What We Like
  • Adjustable headboard height

  • Wheeled drawers

  • Sturdy, squeak-free frame

  • 2 drawer sizes

What We Don't Like
  • Difficult assembly process

Allewie’s elegant platform-style bed features four convenient drawers in two different sizes to suit various storage needs. The drawers, which run the entire length of the bed and feature metal, basket-style construction, sit on wheels (which do work on carpet!) for easy pulling and closing.

While the drawers aren’t all the exact same size, they do offer enough room for items of varying sizes.

This bed is available in three sizes—full, queen, and king—as well as in a few different upholstery colors. We like that you can choose your stitch preference and opt for either a diamond or square pattern across the button-tufted linen-covered headboard. Plus, the headboard is adjustable, a perk that allows it to suit a variety of mattress types and heights smoothly.

Keep in mind, though, that assembly can be tricky. The instructions are somewhat unclear and feature pictures only; however, each component of the storage bed is labeled, which is helpful.

What We Like
  • 4 roomy drawers

  • 6 spacious headboard shelves

  • Multiple colors and sizes

What We Don't Like
  • Time-consuming assembly

  • Headboard requires wall anchoring

Maximize both your available storage space and smaller rooms with the Brimnes bed from IKEA. With clean lines that’ll look great with any aesthetic and four drawers for storage space—plus the added perk of shelving built into the headboard—it’s quite versatile.

Available in three colors and three sizes, this space-saving piece of furniture offers room for linens, clothing, seasonal items, and even some books, photo frames, or nightstand essentials. Just be aware that the headboard isn’t attached to the bed, so you’ll need to anchor it to your wall for safety.

Incorporating this bed into your decor allows you to truly maximize your space, thanks to the large drawers. There’s even cord management built into this storage bed so you can corral cables for your bedside devices.

While you can expect assembly to be time-consuming, including the extra step of having to anchor the headboard to your wall, the end result is a sturdy and convenient piece of furniture.

What We Like
  • Wide range of upholstery options

  • Solid wood components

  • 4 roomy pull-out drawers

What We Don't Like
  • Longer shipping times

If you want to ensure your storage bed aligns to a tee with your design preferences, consider the West Elm Emmett Storage Bed. We love the wide range of upholstery options available, including linen, performance velvet, and twill.

The entire frame is also thickly padded, allowing for a comfortable and aesthetic design. Additionally, you can choose between two headboard heights, which means this bed can easily accommodate a variety of mattress heights.

Of course, the bed also comes with storage—this particular bed has four spacious pull-out drawers on the sides. The drawers measure 28 x 21 x 5.75 inches, which is similar in size to the ones in our best overall Three Posts Losada Upholstered Storage Bed. The frame is made with solid pine and engineered wood, giving it a sturdy base.

Just expect longer shipping times of five or more weeks, which tends to be standard with customizable options in general.

Raymour & Flanigan Quinn Storage Bed

What We Like
  • Fully upholstered headboard

  • Kiln-dried and reinforced frame

  • Slim single drawer

  • Easy assembly

What We Don't Like
  • Shorter drawer height

In addition to adding storage space to your bedroom, the Quinn Storage Bed from Raymour & Flanigan also features a stylish headboard, covered in soft chenille fabric with an eye-catching diamond tufted pattern and nailhead trim. The headboard is functional, too, thanks to the foam padding that makes it comfy to rest against.

Thanks to details like dovetail joints, kiln-dried pine wood, and reinforced frame corners, you can trust that the frame is built for longevity in addition to its beautiful design and color. Plus, this bed arrives fully assembled and placed in your room of choice.

There’s only one drawer in this bed, which extends out from its foot. The drawer is somewhat short, measuring just 15 inches wide and 8 inches tall. That means you can’t store luggage or taller items inside. However, it’s a valuable and easily accessed addition of space—one that blends seamlessly into the bed frame and offers plenty of room for items with less height, like folded linens, and clothes.

Sizes: Queen, king | Storage: Drawer | Materials: Hardwood, kiln-dried wood, MDF board, plywood, polyester fabric | Weight Capacity: 800 pounds (Queen)

What We Like
  • Many wood finish options

  • Sturdy solid wood frame and reinforced joinery

  • Very spacious drawers

What We Don't Like
  • Not suitable for mattresses over 13 inches

Boasting a solid wood frame and a timeless design, the Room&Board Hudson Bed offers both style and durability that we think make it worth the investment. This thoughtfully crafted bedframe is handmade in West Virginia by artisans, and it has a solid wood frame with reinforced joinery for extra sturdiness.

There are seven different wood finishes to choose from, from walnut to maple to ash, depending on your style preference. You can also choose from nine hardware options.

At the foot of the bed, four spacious drawers measure 33 x 15 x 5 inches, which are quite large compared to our best overall Three Posts Losada Upholstered Storage Bed with Wingback, which only offers 29 inches of width in each drawer. Each drawer also has ball-bearing glides that allow them to open and close smoothly.

Just note that this bed frame is recommended to be paired with a mattress that’s 13 inches thick or less, so it might not be best if you have one that’s deeper.

Sizes: Twin, full, queen, king, California king | Storage: Drawer | Materials: Solid wood | Weight Capacity: Not listed

What We Like
  • Light-up headboard with USB ports

  • Plenty of storage space

  • Center support legs for extra stability

What We Don't Like
  • Time-consuming assembly

Union Rustic’s Izena Bookcase Bed is a cleverly designed piece that offers versatile bedroom storage options, thanks to its four drawers at the foot of the bed and cubby-style shelving built into the headboard. You can use that shelving in place of bedside tables or in addition to existing nightstands, giving yourself even more space to pile up books, plants, knickknacks, and other items you want handy.

The headboard even has built-in lights you can control using the included remote, as well as two integrated USB chargers.

The base is made from engineered wood and has center support legs that add stability, which offers this bed frame an impressive weight capacity of 1,000 pounds. You can also choose between white, gray, and brown wooden finishes. While assembly is required, we think the bed’s reasonable price point makes it a great choice overall.

Sizes: Full, queen, king | Storage: Drawers, shelves | Materials: Engineered wood, metal | Weight Capacity: 1,000 pounds

Final Verdict

Our overall best pick is the Three Posts Losada Upholstered Storage Bed with Wingback, a piece of furniture that offers plenty of storage in the form of four pull-out drawers, a customizable headboard, and sturdy construction that’s meant to last you years. If you have limited side or foot clearance, consider our best lift-up option, the DHP Cambridge Upholstered Bed With Storage. It has storage underneath the support slats and an easy, smooth-moving mechanism to lift the whole mattress for tucking away items you don’t often need.

When Buying a Storage Bed, Look for

A Bed Frame That Suits Your Room's Styling

When you start shopping for a storage bed, consider the style (or design) before anything else. As Johnson explains, “Storage beds, aside from their relatively uniform construction, typically come in a broad array of styles ranging from contemporary, mid-century modern, traditional, and even glam.”

This means you can find a bed that matches the rest of your decor and provides you with the extra space needed to stash your items.

For instance, the Raymour & Flanigan Aversa Bed (our best with drawers pick) is a great option if you’re after a mid-century modern design. Our best customizable pick, the West Elm Emmett Nontufted Side Storage Bed, is a fantastic fit if you’re eager for an upholstered headboard. Or, you can try the Room&Board Hudson Bed with Storage Drawers (our best upgrade pick) if you’re searching for a bed that’s handcrafted and timeless.

The Type of Storage and Its Capacity

Storage beds can have drawers, a lift-away frame, or even built-in bookshelves or nightstands. Regardless of the exact type of storage they offer, all these beds have one thing in common: Seamlessly increasing storage space better than under-bed storage containers.

“Storage beds are generally pretty standard in construction with the main difference being the location and size of the drawers or storage space,” says Cameron Johnson, CEO and founder of Nickson Living, a furniture rental company. The following are the main types of storage you’ll find in bed frames:

  • Drawers: Drawers often along the length of the bed, like the Three Posts Losada Upholstered Storage Bed. Some beds have multiple drawers, while others feature a large single drawer at the foot of the bed, like the Raymour & Flanigan Quinn Storage Bed (our best for smaller items pick).
  • Pop-up storage: These storage beds “include hydraulics which allow users to easily lift the entire mattress and access a very large and private storage space,” Johnson explains. This is handy in small spaces, where opening a drawer wouldn’t be possible. We love the DHP Cambridge Upholstered Bed With Storage (our pick for best lift-up).
  • Shelves and bins: Johnson describes this type of storage bed—which includes shelves or bins so you can easily access stored items—as less popular. Still, this style offers the ability to have items accessible, without any sliding or lifting required. One kid-friendly option here is the Pottery Barn Teen Cleary Captain’s Bed (our best for teens pick), while a more sophisticated option is our best with shelves recommendation, the Union Rustic Izena Bookcase Bed
  • Storage capacity: The capacity of storage beds “can range depending on the number of drawers or storage areas and their size,” Johnson says. That said, typically these beds provide at least four cubic feet of storage, he points out (that's roughly the size of a small suitcase). “For context, the average large six-drawer dresser can store between 25 and 30 cubic feet, so a high-capacity storage bed can fit quite a bit,” Johnson adds.

Durable Frame and Drawer Material

You’ll find storage beds constructed out of many different materials. You can choose between upholstered options or more basic wood frames. Most commonly, the frame and drawer components will be made with wood or MDF, Johnson says.

Some beds, like our pick for best customizable, the West Elm Emmett Nontufted Side Storage Bed, come with headboards that have been upholstered and padded—the Emmett is available in a wide range of fabrics and colors, including some performance options.

Meanwhile, the Raymour & Flanigan Quinn Storage Bed (our best for smaller items pick) is designed with diamond button-tufting and nailhead trim. If you’re choosing an upholstered storage bed, Switzer recommends looking for a high-performance fabric. “The fabric will hold up longer with more activity using the storage,” she says.

While the material is somewhat a matter of your personal preference and budget, you can count on a solid wood frame to “stand up to the wear and tear of heavy items, people, and consistent use,” Johnson explains.

A wood frame like the ones found on the Room&Board Hudson Bed (our best upgrade pick) or the Raymour & Flanigan’s Aversa Storage Bed (our best with drawers pick) is typically pricier than one made with MDF, but it’ll be sturdier and offer better longevity.
