Patio furniture looks a bit different for everyone. Some folks are in the market for design-forward dining sets, while others are looking for a colorful bistro set that they can set up on their apartment’s balcony. The best online patio furniture retailers offer a little bit of everything, so you can focus on selecting that perfect comfy chair and some cozy throw pillows, and accessories like outdoor string lights that complete the look.
According to Madelaine Mayer, founder and principal designer at AD: ROIT, if you’re going to be in the same home for more than three years, it’s worth investing in your patio furniture. “Expensive doesn’t always equal quality and vice versa,” she says, “so do your due diligence to find pieces that are made of materials that will withstand the outdoor elements, be comfortable for your body—because every body is different—and allow you to entertain the way you like to entertain.”
When comparing retailers, beyond cost and selection, also consider shipping costs, return policies, and delivery options. We’ve vetted the best retailers that offer outdoor furniture and compared their products, services, prices, and policies to make the process a tad bit easier. Plus, we’ve thrown in some beautiful selects to spruce up your personal “great outdoors,” and designer-backed tips on maintaining your pieces for multiple seasons.
Our selections are also based on our extensive testing experience with outdoor patio furniture, since we have tested products from top retailers and brands like Frontgate, Article, Wayfair, and more that you’ll find on this list.
Wayfair
Free shipping over $35
Regular sales and clearance items
Professional installation available for an extra fee
Very wide variety of products and styles
Products must be disassembled before return
Return shipping costs must be paid by customer
Whether you’re looking for a complete patio set or individual items to mix and match, Wayfair has a wide selection of outdoor furniture, as well as curated collections. You can refine your search by the material, including rust-resistant metal or rattan (as well as premium materials such Sunbrella fabrics and natural hardwoods), and even seating capacity.
The site is easy to use, however with so many options, the choices may become overwhelming, so keep that in mind if you’re still on the fence about a particular style. There is, however, a “tips and guides” section on the Wayfair site to help with design inspo.
We love that Wayfair’s white-glove delivery option includes assembly (at an additional cost) and removal of packaging. Most items ship within three business days, but returns can be tricky. You have to not only disassemble your product before returning it, but you also must pay a return shipping cost, which can be costly for heavier items like metal patio swivel chairs and a rattan sectional that’s built for five people.
All that said, Wayfair has sales regularly and items even go on clearance, meaning you can score them for much less. Financing is also available, so you can pay for your purchase over time.
Return Policy: 30-day return window, but customer must pay shipping cost | Delivery Options: Free shipping on orders over $35, three-day delivery, and white-glove delivery available
Amazon
Can shop for products at various price points
Prime- or fast-delivery available on some items
Great for quick decorating and first homes
Hard to shop by material, fabric, or style
Return policies can vary
A one-stop online shop for just about everything under the sun, Amazon offers plenty of options for outdoor patio furniture and accessories, too. The best part is that you can find an array of price points, whether you’re looking for a full outdoor set to seat plenty of people for under $250 or a weatherproof, all-wicker set for under $500. There are also many different bistro sets if you’re trying to accommodate two people at a time, and options if you want to try out a new accessory like a yard umbrella.
Many items have Prime- or fast-shipping available, but be sure to check the individual product listing and vendor for exact shipping times and return policies, which can vary. Since Amazon is online only, when shopping, you have to rely more on previous shoppers’ experiences. Be sure to read each item’s product description in full, as some products (like cushions) may seem like they’re waterproof, but are really just rain-resistant.
Lastly, if you’re particular about materials, fabrics, and high-end styles, Amazon may not be the best option for you, as it’s hard to navigate by specific materials and brands on the site and app. That said, Amazon can be great for quickly decorating a space or outfitting a first apartment or home on a strict budget.
Return Policy: Depends on vendor; most items have free returns | Delivery Options: Prime- and fast-shipping options available
World Market
Great wood options, including teak
Rewards program
Limited selections
Shipping label fee for returns
From outdoor pillows and cushions to elegant loveseats, World Market offers an eclectic range of items that aren’t your standard cookie-cutter looks. For those looking for wood furniture, in particular, whether it’s a mid-century modern-inspired four-piece set in a bold hue or a chic sectional sofa for luxe lounging, World Market has a great selection of design-forward styles. The website is easy to navigate with sections based on price, color, materials, and type, so you can quickly narrow down exactly what you’re looking for.
If you sign up for their emails and become a rewards member, you’ll also have access to plenty of sales and discounts throughout the year. Many items are only available online, so if you’d like to see an item in-person at any one of their 240 U.S. locations, it may not be available. However, returns are pretty easy—minus a $6.50 return label fee—and most items arrive in under three weeks.
Return Policy: 60-day return window with $6.50 fee for shipping label | Delivery Options: 4 to 10 business days on most items
IKEA
Great selection of basics
Several physical locations for in-person shopping and returns
Lower price point compared to other retailers
Very simple style with limited customization options
Items are not as durable or easy to assembly
As the online go-to for home decor and furniture on a budget, IKEA offers several no-frills options for individual outdoor furniture pieces and sets. While the prices are great, the styles are fairly limited and may seem too basic for many. Most pieces have a simple wood design, but shoppers can also find some powder-coated, steel-frame options, too.
Shoppers have to purchase cushions separately, which adds to the overall cost, as well as furniture covers. IKEA doesn’t offer assembly, however there is a TaskRabbit option for many items at an additional cost. Since there are many locations nationwide, shoppers can pop into an IKEA showroom to see the quality in-person, or if they’re not satisfied with an online purchase, there’s a generous 180-day return policy for any unopened items.
Return Policy: 180-day return window for unopened items | Delivery Options: Click-and-collect pick-up, shop in-store, ship-to-home (only available on certain products)
The Home Depot
Designer brands available
Plenty of cushion colors and designs
Lots of customer reviews and photos
Inventory changes frequently
Website isn’t as easy to navigate
When it comes to reliable outdoor home goods, Home Depot has a wide selection, including complete sets, an array of printed cushions, outdoor grills, and more. If you’re looking to give your backyard a complete makeover or add a few classic rocking chairs to your patio, it’s a go-to, one-stop shop.
Most items ship for free in under two weeks, and Home Depot has a 90-day return policy, just in case you change your mind. There are also several physical locations across the country, so you can choose to pick up your purchase instead of having it delivered to your front door.
If you’re buying a complete dining set, be sure to look at its measurements to make sure it’ll fit in your outdoor space. There’s also plenty of customer photos to browse in case you’re on the fence about any given design, look, or finish.
Return Policy: 90-day return window | Delivery Options: In-store pick-up and free delivery on most items
Article
Trendy styles including mid-century modern sofas
High-quality furniture covers
Plenty of reviews with customer photos
Online only
$49 shipping fee for returns
For design-forward, mid-century modern styles, Article has become a popular retailer. You can shop an excellent selection of acadia wood sofas, sectionals, and chaise lounges that are reminiscent of a luxury beach resort, without the exorbitant price point.
Although there’s a limited selection of cushion colors (which tend to be only gray or white), all of the cushions offered are water-resistant and made with foam padding. Article also offers a great selection of furniture covers, made with strategically inserted vents to help with condensation.
Since Article is online only, you can’t test out a product before purchasing it at a brick-and-mortar store, but there are tons of reviews with customer photos on the site for most items. Exact delivery dates also aren’t given at the time of order, but you can schedule a front-door, in-room, or in-room-plus-assembly delivery for an extra fee (the latter of which costs $199). You can also live chat with customer service if you have any questions about your order.
Return Policy: 30-day exchange window with original packaging; 30-day return window with a $49 shipping fee | Delivery Options: Front-door, in-room, and in-room-plus-assembly delivery available for an extra fee
Pottery Barn
Design-forward and long-lasting styles
Sustainable, responsibly sourced materials
Plenty of delivery and pick-up options
Limited customer reviews
Higher price points compared to other retailers
Longer shipping times with high delivery fees
For higher-end selections, Pottery Barn carries an array of sustainably sourced outdoor furniture, from ottomans and side tables to full dining sets. While we love the trendy yet timeless selections, especially the resort-like lounge chairs, price points can be a bit higher here. But the retailer does have a variety of materials available, from rust-proof metals and eucalyptus wood to woven goods.
The website isn’t as easy to navigate compared to other retailers (at least when it comes to narrowing down your search) and don’t expect super-quick shipping times. In-stock furniture can take anywhere between one and four weeks, and while there is a 30-day return policy, delivery fees are not refundable.
Return Policy: 30-day return window with delivery fees | Delivery Options: 1- to 4-week shipping time for in-stock furniture; standard, next-day, doorstep, and white-glove delivery available
Frontgate
Free design consultation
10-year frame warranty and two-year material warranty
Free fabric swatches
Shipping fees for individual items can be expensive
Frontgate may not be a household name, but it’s only a matter of time. Not only does this brand have a huge selection of high-quality, outdoor products that are designed in-house, but there is a 10-year frame warranty and two-year warranty on cushions, cast aluminum, stainless steel, and wicker and teak finishes.
Frontgate offers free fabric samples and has plenty of fabric options to choose from. You can also pick out replacement cushions in a variety of colors and prints. From bistro chairs to elegant woven chaise lounges and outdoor rugs, you can easily mix and match products, or buy a seating or dining collection.
With brick-and-mortar locations in Texas, Ohio, and Georgia, the online-first store also offers free help with any home project through the design studio. Shoppers can set up a free consultation over the phone, in-person, or virtually to discuss their outdoor design vision and bring it to life.
Return Policy: 90-day return window | Delivery Options: Most items ship within 3 to 7 business days
Crate & Barrel
Great selection of high-end, trendy products
In-home delivery available
Expensive shipping
Crate & Barrel has long been synonymous with high-end, timeless style, albeit their products generally carry a slightly heftier price tag. Whether it’s planters, fire bowls and pits, chic sofas, or durable and weather-resistant fabrics from Sunbrella, Crate & Barrel offers sleek home decor, furniture, and even accessories to transform your backyard into a luxe haven.
In-home delivery is available, but shipping costs and the delivery time frame depend on the individual product and varies widely. The downside is that delivery costs can get quite expensive, going up to 10% of the total purchase, so factor that into your budget, as well.
Return Policy: 30-day return window for new items | Delivery Options: In-home delivery available for extra fee
Target
On-trend designs and exclusive brands
Free shipping on many items
Lower price point compared to other retailers
Many items aren’t available in store or for in-store pickup
No in-home delivery or assembly
As the go-to for all things home goods and then some, it’s no surprise that Target has a wide, on-trend selection of outdoor furniture and accessories, as well as exclusive styles. Most outdoor furnishings will also ship for free. The downside is that a lot of the outdoor sets are sold and shipped by different vendors, but with ample customer reviews on the site, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting beforehand.
For outdoor dining sets, most have detailed dimensions outlined in the description. This matters when it comes to proper spacing on a patio or deck. Shipping times range, but most items come within one or two weeks. That said, there’s no option for in-home delivery or assembly.
Return Policy: 90-day return window | Delivery Options: Free shipping on orders over $35
Lowe's
Exclusive brands that you can shop online and in store
Good design inspiration guides and tips
In-store pickup available
No major complaints
From cushions to waterproof covers, grills, and porch swings, Lowe’s has a little bit of everything to revamp your patio or backyard space. We love that you can sort not only by material, but also shop from Lowe’s exclusive brand collaborations, including Allen + Roth and Origin 21.
Another bonus is you can search via price categories (such as “patio sets for under $400” or “outdoor rugs for under $100”), which is great if you’re sticking to a specific budget for an individual item.
For the not-so-design savvy among us, the Lowe’s website also provides great patio inspiration and even design guides, helping shoppers navigate choices with practical tips and selections. Free shipping is available on items over $45, and you can pick up many items for free at your local store.
Return Policy: 90-day return window | Delivery Options: Free shipping on orders over $45
Walmart
Great deals and sales
Fast shipping on most items
Brand collaborations, including one with Better Homes & Gardens
Quality can be hit or miss
For those shopping on a budget, or who just want the convenience of what a big-box retailer with online and in-store locations offers, Walmart has a wide selection of outdoor goods—including full patio sets, loveseats, grills, and more. There aren’t many places where you can snag a seven-piece dining set for as little as $360 or a classic Adirondack chair for under $90—but here, you can.
For something a little more high-end, they also have a brand collaboration with Better Homes & Gardens, including on-trend nesting tables and a sofa for a reasonable $700. Shipping times are generally fast and most items are available for in-store pick-up, but since Walmart carries so many different brands, many products are only available online and delivery options can vary.
The good news is, if you’re not happy with your purchase, you can return it at your local retailer within 90 days.
Return Policy: 90-day return window | Delivery Options: Shipping times and cost vary based on item and vendor
CB2
Trendy goods at a more competitive price
Nice planter, lighting, and rug collections
No free delivery
Crate & Barrel’s sister company CB2 offers a great selection of trendy goods at competitive price points. While prices are still higher than some big-box retailers, you can find gorgeous dining tables and chairs for under $1,000. We especially love their lighting collection, so if you’re not going to splurge for a full dining set, definitely check out their accessories, including the dreamy travertine wall scones and cozy outdoor pillows.
In-home delivery is available on most items for an extra fee of $150, but it includes unlimited furniture items per trip, up to 100 miles from your house. Alternatively, you can type in your zip code and select “warehouse pick-up” at no cost if you’d like to exercise that option.
Return Policy: 30-day return window | Delivery Options: In-home delivery of unlimited furniture items for $150 per trip
How We Picked the Patio Furniture Retailers
Each of the retailers we selected offers hundreds, if not thousands, of options for outdoor furniture. They all have highly-rated products with ample customer reviews and photos so you can understand what you’re getting before it arrives at your doorstep. Also, each retailer offers various price points—so, you can outfit a luxe garden or first apartment balcony and stick to your individual budget.
Thanks to our rigorous and ample testing experiences, we also have experience with several of these brands, and you can find them in our other outdoor furniture roundups.
What to Consider When Shopping for Patio Furniture
Figure Out What Works for Your Needs—and How You’ll Protect It Over Time
According to Madelaine Mayer, founder and principal designer at AD: ROIT, the first thing you should consider when shopping for outdoor patio furniture is how you want to enjoy your space. “Do you want to be able to lounge and take naps on the sofa? Have dinner parties for a dozen people, or do you want it to be flexible? Figure out what your real needs are, for you, and that’ll dictate the pieces you purchase,” Mayer says.
Next, you want to also consider how you’ll use the furniture. Will it be seasonal or will you keep the pieces out all year long? If so, under what weather conditions? “If it’s all-year, you’re looking at a more limited range of materials,” Mayer notes, and if so, it’s best to buy quality furniture covers for the off-season months.
How long your patio furniture will last all comes down to how you take care of it, as well as the initial quality of the materials. “If you’re investing in really good, quality pieces—and you’re not leaving them out year-round to just be toyed with—you should be able to expect at least 15 years out of a piece," notes Mayer.
The Size of the Furniture You’re Looking At
Mayer stresses that it's also really important to think about the size of your outdoor space and what size furniture will make sense in that space. “You don’t want [the furniture] to take up every last inch and feel really cramped and crowded, especially if you’re normally two to four people. If you want 16 people over twice a year, don’t design it for 16 people and have it be uncomfortable," she says. In that situation, for example, she recommends just opting for a bistro table for two and catering to what is more often than not.
The Materials and Fabrics Available
Again, consider whether your patio furniture will stay outdoors year-round, be covered up for three seasons out of the year, or will need extra-durable covers to withstand extreme weather. “If you’re bringing it inside, it doesn’t have to be as resilient. But teak and powder-coated metals will be able to withstand moisture without rusting or cracking,” Mayer advises, adding that steel and aluminum are great options for the base.
Powdered-coated metals tend to be rust-resistant and come in beautiful shades and hues. “You can do any color you can imagine," Mayer notes. "That’s where you get those hard candy colors in a piece of furniture (like when you think of M&Ms or Skittles)." She adds that steel can also be heavier, feeling more commercial-grade.
Be sure that you purchase fabrics designed for the outdoors too, including those that are “UV stable, moisture-resistant, [and] outdoor-rated," Mayer recommends. “If you look for a Sunbrella fabric at Pottery Barn, those are all going to be outdoor rated. If you don’t see those words, call the company to ask them. Don’t try to put an indoor cushion and leave it outside and hope it’s not going to fade or get destroyed,” she adds.
Any Available Delivery and Assembly Options
Shipping times and delivery costs truly vary from one retailer to the next, but some, like Pottery Barn and Wayfair, offer several options, including white-glove delivery and assembly. For other retailers like Amazon, be sure to look closely at the delivery time frames, as it varies according to the brand your chosen item is coming from.
If you’re more of a DIY-er and are comfortable putting together a complete set on your own, “many retailers offer detailed assembly instructions before you buy [the furniture],” says Mayer, so opting for assembly isn't as necessary.
