Having an air mattress on hand is the easiest, quickest way to create a comfy place to sleep when guests visit. Ready to sleep on in a matter of minutes and able to be deflated, packed compactly, and taken anywhere, an air mattress is both convenient and wonderfully flexible.
But you don't just want guests (or yourself, if you need to use your own air mattress) to sleep comfortably. Durability is a critical factor for any air mattress, and after inflating, puncturing, and laying on 26 options in The Lab and over months at home, we've discovered it's a feature that's hard to find. Ultimately, we found a couch is pretty much always preferable to sleeping on an air mattress.
While we did find a few models that performed consistently and offered decent comfort for a night of sleep, overall, air mattresses tend to spring leaks and lose their support by the 6-month mark. The air mattresses we've included here are the only models we stand behind.

Best Overall
Beautyrest Skyrise Air Mattress
-
Supportive
-
700-pound weight capacity
One-touch comfort button to adjust firmness
External pump
Takes more time to inflate and deflate than other models
While the Beautyrest Skyrise Air Mattress costs less than many other options we tested, it didn’t fall short in terms of features, comfort, and performance. In fact, in our lab testing, we loved how comfortable this air mattress was; it felt similar to a standard mattress and provided sufficient back support.
We tested several air mattresses with adjustable firmness, but if this feature is a priority for you, this is a standout pick. Instead of using a dial that fills the air mattress to pre-set firm, medium, or plush settings, the Skyrise Raised Express Air Mattress lets you control the firmness with a one-touch adjustable comfort button. This gives you the ability to adjust the air mattress to suit your needs, rather than relying on fixed settings or manually letting air out from the valve (which is how most air mattresses adjust).
Once filled, this mattress is durable, stable, and supportive. It didn’t move when we lightly jumped onto the bed, and it lost less than 1 inch of air in our overnight weight test.
Take note that this adjustable air mattress uses an external electric pump rather than a built-in pump. In our testing, it took longer to inflate this air mattress than other models—over 9 minutes in total. Once we figured out the pump featured separate inflate and deflate functions, the process became more efficient, but we think deflating is a job best accomplished by two people.
Inflated Dimensions: 75 x 54 x 16 inches (queen) | Inflation Method: External electric pump | Weight Capacity: 700 pounds | Pump Included: Yes
Most Durable
Englander Air Mattress
No air leakage
Portable and easy to store
Very durable
Comfortable and supportive
Setup has a learning curve
It's hard to find a truly tough air mattress that won't spring a leak, but in our testing, we found the Dream Series from SoundAsleep was one of several queen air mattresses that stood out for its comfort and durability.
As we slept on this air mattress, we found it very comfortable and roomy enough for two people to share comfortably, with minimal motion transfer. Most importantly, there was little to no air leakage, and the mattress stayed at a firm level throughout the testing period. During our puncture test, the outer material held strong and withstood our attempts to puncture it quite well, with no marks or indentations visible.
When fully inflated, its dimensions are identical to a standard queen mattress, at 80 inches long and 60 inches wide. This isn’t always the case, though—many air mattresses don’t always match with traditional mattress sizes, so be sure to double-check the dimensions before purchasing.
While we like that the 20-inch-thick mattress sits quite high off the ground, just note you may want to opt for an extra-deep fitted sheet. Additionally, we did discover there's a slight learning curve to setting up the mattress; however, it was fairly simple to maneuver once we got the hang of it.

Best Splurge
Insta-Bed Raised Pillow-Top Air Mattress
Luxurious pillowtop
Quiet pump operation
Automatic shutoff feature
Limited motion transfer
Carrying case is a bit small
The Insta-Bed Raised 18-in Queen Pillow Top Air Mattress offers a high-quality construction and premium features that make it an upgrade from your standard air mattress. In terms of comfort, this mattress was exceptionally impressive. Made with a suede pillowtop, it feels supremely soft and offers a more comfortable sleeping surface compared to traditional air mattresses.
We also liked that there was minimal motion transfer when sharing the bed with a partner. That's thanks to the Insta-Bed's two internal air pumps—the primary pump is used to inflate the bed, and the secondary continuous pump automatically monitors the air pressure of the inflated mattress, sensing when it needs to add more air to maintain firmness.
You can choose between plush, medium, or firm comfort levels, which allows guests to customize the mattress to their sleeping preferences. We found the setup process simple; it inflated in under three minutes and automatically shut off at our desired comfort level. We also liked how quiet it was, as the air pumps weren’t as noisy or disruptive as other options we tested.
Packing up and folding the mattress was very easy, but we wish the carrying case were a bit bigger to more comfortably accommodate the size of the air mattress.
The air mattress also proved to be very durable, performing very well during our puncture test with little damage evident in the material. Considering this product’s high-end features, top-notch comfort, and overall convenience, we think the Insta-Bed Air Mattress definitely warrants its higher price tag.
Inflated Dimensions: 78 x 60 x 18 inches (queen) | Inflation Method: Internal electric pump | Weight Capacity: Not listed | Pump Included: Yes
Best Twin
Intex Dura-Beam Deluxe Air Mattress
Lofty, supportive feel
Easy inflation and deflation
Convenient to store and transport
May shift with excessive movement
For a supportive and durable twin-size air mattress, the Intex Dura-Beam is a great option. This version is as long as a standard twin mattress (75 inches) and also provides an inch of extra width. Standing 16.5 inches tall, we appreciated the mattress’s lofty feel during our testing process.
Ideal as an extra bed for one overnight guest or a child, the Intex Dura-Beam twin air mattress uses a built-in electric pump for easy set-up. It took us 6 minutes to assemble the bed, and we found the pump made it faster and easier to deflate the air mattress, too.
This air mattress features a flocked surface, built-in pillow, and raised edge. We found it well-designed, comfortable, and durable, but we did note that this air mattress wasn’t as stable during our testing process, moving an inch or two when we jumped onto it. However, given the fact that the twin-size mattress has less surface area in contact with the floor, we weren’t surprised to see it shift a little.
Inflated Dimensions: 75 x 39 x 16.5 inches (twin) | Inflation Method: Built-in pump | Weight Capacity: 300 pounds | Pump Included: Yes
Best with Frame
Ivation EZ-Bed Air Mattress with Frame
Height of a standard bed
Rolling storage case
Adjustable firmness settings
Heavy to carry
Deflated more than other air mattresses tested
The Ivation EZ-Bed Air Mattress makes an air mattress feel more like a true bed, thanks to its self-deploying frame. Of all the air mattresses we've tested, this was one of the easiest to set up—even with a frame! The addition of this frame gives the bed a height of 24 inches and, we found, makes it easier to get in and out of bed.
The process of setting up this mattress was largely hands-off, and it took only six and a half minutes to complete. You just unzip the case, select the firmness level, and move the dial to inflate. In just a few minutes, you'll have a comfortable bed for guests.
The Ivation EZ-Bed features dozens of support coils and adjustable firmness levels, including plush, medium, and firm. A flocked top gives the bed a softer feel and keeps sheets from sliding. When inflated, the frame gives the bed a substantial look worthy of a temporary set-up in a small guest room.
However, it's worth noting this mattress wasn’t the most stable option we tested. We found it can move a bit under shifting weight, and it does have the potential to lose some air overnight.
Deflating the mattress was fast and easy, and it collapsed to fit inside of a zippered duffel bag with wheels. It would be easy to roll this air mattress out of a closet, but the case is a little heavy and bulky. It may be challenging for one person to carry it up a flight of stairs.
Inflated Dimensions: 79 x 61 x 24 inches (full size, includes mattress frame) | Inflation Method: Built-in electric pump | Weight Capacity: 450 pounds | Pump Included: Yes
Final Verdict
We've named the Beautyrest Skyrise Air Mattress our best overall pick because it's budget-friendly, value-packed, and impressively comfortable thanks to its adjustable firmness level, so you can cater to your overnight guest’s preferences. If it's long-term durability you're looking for, the Englander Air Mattress (our most durable pick) handled our puncture tests and maintained its firmness like a pro.
How We Tested the Mattresses
In total, we've tested 26 different air mattresses over the last few years, with our team of editors and testers putting them through setup, sleep, and durability tests both in the lab and at home. We've tested every type of air mattress, including options for kids, with frames and headboards, and products with internal and external pumps.
As we inflated, slept on, and deflated each air mattress, we timed how long they took to set up and noted how loud the pump was. Over the course of our testing, we've learned that air mattresses with internal pumps are more convenient, portable, and compact, but they tend to come at a higher price point.
Air mattresses with external pumps, on the other hand, are usually cheaper. We've found they can also be more powerful and efficient than internal ones. As an added perk, external pumps can also be replaced separately from the air mattress if it breaks, which can save you money in the long run.
We then literally (and carefully) leapt into each mattress and noted how well it stayed put or if it felt unstable or scooted across the floor. We evaluated the comfort of each air mattress by laying down on top of the mattress, noting firmness and support, and then using them for nights of sleep at home.
One of the most common concerns with air mattresses is their durability, so if any showed wear and tear or ripped during our testing process (including during our months-long at-home testing), we took note. We also performed a puncture test to determine the strength and thickness of the outer material, using a pet brush to gently puncture the surface of each air mattress.
These durability tests ultimately shaped our final list. While we initially had positive experiences with a number of air mattresses from brands like Chillsun and Intex, we discovered that within 6 months they were all deflating. Other online reviewers may not have actively used these for 6 months and, therefore, they can seem to work well initially.
Other Options We Tested
Over the course of our 6-month testing period, we saw some key changes across many of the air mattresses we tested. While in the lab and our first months of testing at home certain air mattresses appeared to be standouts in both comfort and durability. However, as our testing period wore on, we discovered that air loss was a common issue.
Our team found that even if an air mattress didn't spring noticeable holes, air loss still happened. With regular, typical use, the majority of the products we tested developed issues holding onto their air and maintaining their firmness and support. We suspect that, since we were unable to find any holes or areas of air leakage, this is unfortunately a problem that plagues most air mattresses.
Most notably, the Chillsun Twin Air Mattress and the INTEX Dura-Beam Deluxe Comfort-Plush Mid-Rise Air Mattress—two of our frontrunners after our lab and initial at-home testing—were standouts because they were more durable and better able to hang onto their air right out of the box.
However, by the 6-month mark, both of these mattresses started completely deflating, either within just a few minutes or overnight, by the time we woke up in the morning.
So, while we think these air mattresses do have their strengths (and they did impress us with their comfort and support at first), we think it's worth knowing they only survived relatively short-term use cases. On average, an air mattress used occasionally will last about two years, but we've found that many don't make it to this milestone.
When Buying an Air Mattress, Look for
All-Night Comfort and Support
In general, sleeping on air mattresses for long periods of time can cause poor sleep quality over time due to discomfort and lack of support, according to Dr. Heather Moore, PT, DPT, and owner of Total Performance Physical Therapy. “While there are people that are able to sleep on them for a night or two, getting a good night's sleep consistently on an air mattress can be difficult,” she says. “An air mattress can offer no support or relief to pressure points on your body, like a traditional mattress can.”
If you want to elevate the comfort level of your current air mattress, Dr. Moore recommends adding a mattress topper to “make the bed more supportive and more comfortable overall.” However, we think investing in an air mattress that includes built-in comfort features is the best choice in the long run, since a topper may not remain securely over your air mattress and can be a hassle to store.
In general, finding a comfortable air mattress has a lot to do with adjustability. We love that the Beautyrest Skyrise Air Mattress (our best overall pick) allows you to choose between plush, medium, and firm comfort levels.
In addition, you’ll also want to consider materials and construction. Our best splurge pick, the Insta-Bed Raised 18-in Queen Pillow Top Air Mattress, comes with a plush pillowtop that resembles a traditional mattress more than many other options we’ve tested.
Standard Mattress Height (or Close to It)
Just like any other type of mattress, you should decide how high you want your air mattress to be before you browse through options. Generally, shoppers have two options—low-profile and double-height—both of which have their own pros and cons.
While low-profile mattresses are lightweight and portable enough to bring on a camping trip, they might require extra legwork as they may deflate quickly. Plus, some models may still come with a manual pump.
A taller, double-height mattress may not be ideal for every situation, but these models typically come with an electric pump to make inflation a little easier. Guests will also appreciate their soft, sturdy, and slump-resistant construction.
Just note that you’ll want to dress your air mattress with extra deep fitted sheets to ensure they don’t slip off the sides. Our most durable pick, the Englander Air Mattress, is a whopping 20 inches thick, offering a plush double-height surface that’s exceptionally comfortable to sleep on.
Air mattresses with built-in frames, like the Ivation EZ-Bed Air Mattress with Frame (our best with frame pick), can elevate the entire mattress, which helps it to feel like a proper bed when you have guests over.
A Quick, Efficient Internal or External Pump
Like most of today's air mattresses, the models we tested all had pumps to inflate them, which saves you the trouble of blowing them up manually. However, we noticed those with internal electric pumps were the best performers because of their convenience and ease of storage.
In our testing, we found that the average inflation time was two and a half minutes, and our top picks range anywhere from around two minutes to over four. However, we noticed that many of our speedier options also have louder pumps, which is worth noting.
When shopping, you’ll also want to check whether the mattress you’re considering needs to be plugged into an outlet or has a battery-powered pump; the latter is an essential feature if you plan to take it out into the wilderness. You may also want to consider whether the pump is internal or external, as each comes with its own benefits.
Air mattresses with internal pumps are more convenient and portable but may come at a higher price point compared to those with external pumps. Most of the picks on this list come with an internal electric pump.
External pumps can sometimes be more powerful than internal pumps, inflating the air mattress faster and more efficiently. Additionally, if the external pump breaks, you won’t have to worry about replacing the entire mattress, as you can replace the pump separately. Our best overall pick, the Beautyrest Skyrise Air Mattress, comes with an external pump.
During testing, we were big fans of the mattresses that had adjustable firmness settings built into their pumps. Our best splurge pick, the Insta-Bed Raised 18-in Queen Pillow Top Air Mattress, allows you to set your desired firmness level and then inflate the mattress.
Extra Comfort-Enhancing Features
Some air mattresses have added features that increase the price tag but elevate the user experience. For example, the Insta-Bed Raised 18-in Queen Pillow Top Air Mattress & Internal Never Flat Pump boasts a luxurious pillowtop, continuous pump, automatic shutoff feature, and adjustable firmness settings.
According to Dr. Moore, a secondary continuous pump can help ensure your guests have a good night’s rest, as it prevents deflation and helps maintain support throughout the night: “You do not want to wind up on the floor… and having a constant pump that keeps the pressure all night will allow for that,” she says.
Other air mattresses have frames that will retract as they deflate, making the cleanup process after overnight guests truly stress-free. We especially like the Ivation EZ-Bed Air Mattress with Frame, as the self-deploying frame gives the feeling of a proper guest room.
The Bestway Headboard Queen Air Mattress with Built-in Pump, also provides a more comfortable and supportive construction that’s a definite upgrade from your typical air mattress.
While more basic models like the Englander Air Mattress w/ Built in Pump may not come with all the bells and whistles of premium models, they will still do the trick for short-term sleepover guests.
