Area volleyball teams Hamlin, Sioux Vallley, Warner, Hitchcock-Tulare & Castlewood headed to state

Five area Class A and B volleyball teams each clinched state tournament berths with victories in SoDak 16 state-qualifying matches on Tuesday.

No. 2 seed Hamlin (24-1) and No. 11 seed Sioux Valley (24-6) each won Class A matches.

No. 2 Warner (31-3), No. 3 Hitchcock-Tulare (31-2) and No. 10 Castlewood (19-10) each won Class B matches.

The three-class state tournament runs Nov. 21-23 in the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center at Sioux Falls.

Here's highlights from Tuesday's matches involving area teams:

Class A (No. 2 Hamlin 3, No. 15 St. Thomas More 0)

CHAMBERLAIN — Hamlin increased its winning streak to 13 matches and qualified for state for the first time since 2021 with a 25-17, 25-15 and 25-14 win over St. Thomas More.

The Chargers were in control most of the match with the exception of an 8-5 deficit in the first set and a 5-4 deficit in the third set.

Addie Neuendorf recorded 11 kills and eight digs, Addie Steffensen eight kills, Jayci Trowbridge five aces and 18 digs, Issie Steffensen 24 assists and seven digs, Jo Steffensen four kills, Kayde Nebel three block assists and Addie Jensen two block assists for Hamlin.

St. Thomas More ended its season at 27-14.

Class A (No. 11 Sioux Valley 3, No. 6 Hill City 2)

PHILIP — Sioux Valley rallied to win the final two sets and take the match 14-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-21 and 15-7.

Adison Renkly and Kaedyn Sapp each tallied 12 kills for the Cossacks, who fell behind 4-0 in the fifth set before closing out the match with a 15-3 surge.

Sioux Valley meets fellow Lake Central Conference foe Hamlin in the first-round of the state Class A tournament at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21. Hamlin won a five-set match with Sioux Valley during the regular season.

Class A (No. 3 Dell Rapids 3, No. 14 Aberdeen Roncalli 0)

WHITE — Aberdeen Roncalli's bid to make it to state ended in the SoDak 16 for the second-straight year.

Dell Rapids (29-3) posted a 25-19, 25-13 and 25-8 win over the Cavaliers, who finished their season at 16-9.

Sophia Randall tallied five aces, 26 assists, seven kills and two blocks; Karlie Ingalls four aces; Madelynn Henry 13 kills and seven digs; Lauryn Kloth and Peyton Hohn six kills apiece; Alaina Wolff six digs; and Clara Justice three aces for Dell Rapids.

McKenna O'Keefe made five kills and four digs, Ava Hanson five kills, Rylee Voeller four kills, Maddie Huber three kills and 15 assists and Cambry Feickert four digs for Roncalli.

Class A (No. 7 Mt. Vernon-Plankinton 3, No. 10 Groton Area 1)

HURON — Like Roncalli, Groton Area fell short in the SoDak 16 for a second-straight year.

MVP improved to 27-5 with a 25-15, 25-19, 18-25 and 25-14) win over the Tigers (19-7).

Groton Area leaders were Rylee Dunker with 10 kills; Chesney Weber eight kills, 12 assists and 15 digs; Liz Fliehs two aces and 15 assists; Taryn Traphagen six kills; Jerica Locke 22 digs; and Jaedyn Penning and Laila Roberts 15 digs apiece.

Class A (No. 9 Winner 3, No. 8 Mobridge-Pollock 2)

FORT PIERRE — Winner (26-6) avenged two regular-season losses and handed Mobridge-Pollock (27-9) a SoDak 16 defeat for the fifth-straight season.

The Warriors won 25-23, 12-25, 21-25, 25-20 and 17-15.

Mobridge-Pollock's leaders included Raelyn Aberle, two aces, 21 kills and 18 digs; Charley Henderson, 18 kills and 16 digs; Tegan Konold, three aces, five kills and 20 digs; Sophia Overland, 27 assists and 23 digs; Jacy Netterville, two aces and 31 digs; and Ellie Kemnitz, 12 assists and 17 digs.

Class B (No. 2 Warner 3, No. 15 Faulkton Area 0)

REDFIELD — Warner qualified for state for the eighth-straight year and the 12th time in 13 years by beating fellow Lake Region Conference foe Faulkton Area 25-12, 25-10 and 25-14.

Kyleigh Schopp collected 13 kills and three block assists, Jaycee Jung 10 kills and 15 digs and MaKenna Leidholt nine kills for the winning Monarchs.

Jordyn Jensen went 23-23 serving with three aces and 15 digs and Libby Scepaniak 20-20 serving with 17 assists. Reagan Wood added 21 assists, Haleigh Holt 14 digs and Miah Leidholt three block assists.

Faulkton Area ended its season with a 15-17 record.

Class B (No. 3 Hitchcock-Tulare 3, No. 14 Herreid-Selby Area 0)

MELLETTE — Hitchcock-Tulare will take a 31-2 record into the state tournament after beating Herreid-Selby Area 25-17, 25-22 and 25-21.

The Patriots were led by Isabel Gilbert, 16-18 serving with three aces; Ella Johnson, 14-16 serving with two aces; Katelyn Schroeder, 12-12 serving with two aces, 21 kills and 17 digs; Cory Hofer, five kills; Rebecca Huizenga, six kills; Lila Johnson 23 assists and 11 digs; Gracyn Bixler, 15 assists; and Cambree Hoekman, 21 digs.

FINAL STATE VOLLEYBALL POLL:Watertown, Warner, Hitchcock-Tulare, Northwestern rated in final volleyball poll

The Wolverines (18-12) got two aces, five kills and 19 digs from Breanna Jochim; two aces and 20 digs from Steph Allbee; 10 kills from Jordyn Rossow; 19 assists and 13 digs from Katie Allbee; four assists from Pausha Meidinger and two aces from Jessie Johnson.

Class B (No. 10 Castlewood 3, No. 7 Faith 0)

GETTYSBURG — Castlewood rallied to win a battle in Gettysburg after dropping the first two sets.

The match featured an unofficial 54 ties as both teams kept trading points, especially in the final three sets.

The Warriors (19-10) eventually prevailed 20-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-22 and 16-14.

Emerson Carter ( 29 kills) and Cassidy Kirwan (30 assists, 15 kills and 28 digs) led Castlewood. Claire Horn went 15-16 serving and Ava Ruml (11 kills and four block assists), Lilly Jacobsen (one solo block and three block assists), Emery Larson (23 assists), Nora Solberg (34 digs) and Ciara Kjetland (20) also were key contributors.

Class B (No. 8 Colman-Egan 3, No. 9 Edgemont 0)

CHAMBERLAIN — Colman-Egan won 25-18, 25-16 and 25-21 to clinch a fifth-straight trip to state.

The Hawks upped their record to 24-5. Edgemont finished 30-4.
