Grimes is grappling with the devastation caused by Los Angeles' wildfires, which have displaced nearly 200,000 Californians, including herself.
On Thursday, January 9, the 36-year-old musician — born Claire Boucher — took to X (previously Twitter) to describe the scene as “Biblical,” sharing her fears about humanity’s readiness to address the growing climate crisis.
“We might be outta time w regards to twiddling our thumbs whilst every level of our culture, environment, government, institutions, mental health, etc have obviously crumbled,” she wrote.
The wildfires, which began Tuesday (January 7) in Pacific Palisades, have rapidly spread across L.A. County, destroying an estimated 10,000 homes and structures and leaving at least 10 people dead as of Thursday, per CNN.
Grimes, who evacuated earlier this week, described her harrowing experience on social media: “Just had to evacuate, tried to go to a friend’s place / it got an evacuation warning on the way there — now aimlessly driving out of the city.”
In her tweets, Grimes also addressed a commenter who criticised her ex-partner Elon Musk, defending the tech mogul’s contributions to combating climate change through electric vehicle innovation.
“He’s pretty vocal about climate change and is primarily known for, in part, revolutionising electric vehicles… The biggest challenge right now is not falling into creating and consuming dopamine rage bait on social media,” she wrote, urging focus on “truth-based discourse.”
Grimes and Musk, who share three children, ended their relationship in 2022 but remain connected through their family.
