It sounds like you are probabl...This is ridiculous. It sounds like you are probably correct that a gifted program was not for you and you should have not been in the program. While I completely agree that there are many different types of intelligences and children can develop their abilities across many of them, I taught myself to read at age 3. Not all children can do that and what it represents is not something than can be developed. Fundamental neurological differences do exist, as much as people like to deny that when it comes to differences that are perceived to confer advantage.

If I hadn’t had a safer space full of people who were more like me in these fundamental ways, where I could express myself more without having to deal with the reactions of neurotypical students and teacher, I guarantee I would have dropped out of school or killed myself.

Further, many of us prefer being a lower performer in a more challenging environment because many gifted individuals are motivated not by measures of success that involve a social comparison, such as class ranking, but by innate curiosity. Being top of class in an environment comprised of students & teachers whose intellects are not in the same realm as mine is far more psychologically torturous than being at the bottom of a group of students who are intellectually stimulating. The fact that you cannot relate to this very common gifted experience and perspective underscores my point that, likely, you were not actually the type of child that these programs are designed to serve.

I think many of pedagogical changes you discuss should absolutely be incorporated into all classrooms. However, that should have nothing to do with gifted students’ access to the special education that they need. In my opinion, it is ableist and regressive to base one’s argument for improving other students’ learning environment on denying another group of students access to an environment that better meets their needs.Anonymous[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4023603571336529249.post-36020556978932061222024-05-06T11:21:45.399-04:002024-05-06T11:21:45.399-04:00I was able to recognize patterns at age 3, younger...I was able to recognize patterns at age 3, younger than a child is supposedly able to do so. I mentally count groups of like objects because I don't see them as single objects. I see them as groups of 3, 4 or 5 and then mentally multiply the number of groups. I read somewhere that children have to be taught to do this, but I d look n't recall ever not knowing. I also taught myself to read at age 4 by deciphering the "squiggles" on the back of the evening newspaper as my father read the front, as well as cereal boxes and anything else containing words.JamaGeniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16973656461323918279[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4023603571336529249.post-35010605264052477782024-03-29T17:59:13.315-04:002024-03-29T17:59:13.315-04:00I understand your frustration with some aspects of...I understand your frustration with some aspects of the educational system. I've started...This was super interesting to me. I've started thinking about my experience in a Gifted & Talented program and how it shaped some negative beliefs about myself. I completely agree that students would be better served with a strengths-based approach, integrated into all classrooms rather than continuing with the separation model.
GT was full of black-and-white thinking in the late 90s/early 2000s. I received the message, intentionally or not, that if I didn't excel in every advanced-level subject, then I wasn't smart. Unfortunately, this led to a lot of cheating on homework and tests among my peers and me. I was excellent at writing but struggled in math, and once I started falling behind, it was almost impossible to catch up without cheating. I would love to see education that focuses more on patiently wrestling with problems and critical thinking, rather than on grades and getting the right answer at all costs.
Thanks for your thoughtful article.Elizabeth[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4023603571336529249.post-90042044878677456612023-05-22T09:05:07.922-04:002023-05-22T09:05:07.922-04:00thanksthanksAnonymous[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4023603571336529249.post-48613203989768765592023-04-21T06:07:42.641-04:002023-04-21T06:07:42.641-04:00NiceNiceChuck Bushhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14786121838625418137[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4023603571336529249.post-33573833849706748782023-04-15T09:51:49.055-04:002023-04-15T09:51:49.055-04:00thanks a lot for this post, helped a lot.thanks a lot for this post, helped a lot.CIWSTUDYhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07072066840591547616[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4023603571336529249.post-10683717699223727932023-04-14T12:28:03.424-04:002023-04-14T12:28:03.424-04:00Thank you for sharing.Thank you for sharing.Jim @ scholarlyhelphttps://scholarlyhelp.com/[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4023603571336529249.post-26253328288730050582023-04-10T05:31:43.555-04:002023-04-10T05:31:43.555-04:00Thanks for sharing these useful information.keep u...Thanks for sharing these useful information.keep up the good workfmi1http://virtuelcampus.univ-msila.dz/fmi[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4023603571336529249.post-82207247768622455762023-04-08T07:00:10.566-04:002023-04-08T07:00:10.566-04:00Thank you for your question.
