The PDI-P and Gerindra Party have similar political paradigms, as both are nationalist parties, said PDI-P politician Andi Widjajanto.
he Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), which opposed president-elect Prabowo Subianto in the February election, will act as a “balancing force” with regard to the incoming administration, party members have said.
PDI-P politician Andi Widjajanto said on Tuesday that the party’s stance followed the directive of PDI-P chair Megawati Soekarnoputri, without detailing whether the party would join the coalition of parties supporting Prabowo.
Whether the party will operate “from within or outside [the administration] is not an issue. It's about how we play the role of a balancing force," Andi told reporters after a discussion on President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s decade in office organized by the Indonesian Laboratory 2045 (Lab45) research institute at the National Library in Central Jakarta.
Andi said the party's concern was that the Prabowo administration would have the burden of addressing democratic regression, which could impact the country's economic and social situation following Jokowi's political maneuvering.
He added that the party would "prepare to build strategic interactions with the upcoming government”.
“The primary concern of the PDI-P is regarding the actions taken by President Jokowi as we approached 2024. It will be a burden that Prabowo must address immediately,” said Andi, who is the head of the PDI-P’s research and policy analysis division.
In his closing remarks after the discussion, Andi said the PDI-P and Gerindra, chaired by Prabowo, shared a similar political paradigm, as both were nationalist parties.
