Panthers open season with split at Manila Tournament

RANGELY |  The Rangely Panthers boys’ basketball team opened the 2024-25 season on the road in Manila, Utah, at a two-day tournament.

In the first game, the Panthers faced a talented host, the Manila Mustangs. Rangely struggled early to make shots and fell behind 12-2. After a timeout, the Panthers started finding their rhythm, but the Mustangs still led 22-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Panthers used a full-court press in the second quarter to cut the lead to 7, but a late run by Manila put the score at 44-25 at halftime. Rangely continued to battle in the second half but ultimately lost, 71-43. Lincoln Harris led the Panthers with 12 points, while Marcos Quintana and Landon Bollinger each contributed 8 points.

In their second game of the tournament, the Panthers faced the Dugway Mustangs. Rangely came out with an aggressive press defense from the opening tip, building an early 21-3 lead. The Panthers continued their dominance in the second quarter and led 39-6 at halftime. Dugway scored more in the second half, but Rangely kept control, finishing with a 74-23 victory.

The Panthers forced 27 turnovers and grabbed 54 rebounds in the game. Kacey Allred led the team with 15 points, while Marcos Quintana had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Lincoln Harris also recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Point guard Clay Allred contributed 10 points and 6 assists.

This game showcased the balanced scoring and strong team defense that will be key to the Panthers’ success this season. This year’s seniors include post players Marcos Quintana and Timber Johnson as well as point guard Clay Allred. The Panthers will be coached by Seth Watson, Clint Hill, and Mike Cochrane. Rangely will look to build on this victory next week at their home tournament, where they will face West Grand in the first game on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
