Hailey Bieber’s latest Rhode launch — the Barrier Butter — is an overnight savior for dehydrated skin. It’s an intensely nourishing moisture balm that is meant to be used at night to intensely moisturize. It doesn’t have a balm-y texture, though; it’s formulated like a rich moisturizer, one that has to really be rubbed in and not one that instantly melts into the skin. With ingredients like murumuru butter, hyaluronic-acid complex, and ceramides, it provides moisture and hydration to the skin’s surface. It can also be used on body parts: Bieber recommends using it on areas prone to dryness, like hands, elbows, and knees. It tried it for a week. Here are my thoughts.

What Makes This Different From the Barrier Restore Cream?

The new Barrier Butter is more of an overnight sealant for products, while the Restore Cream is a more lightweight cream. I tried the Barrier Butter for a week and tried it out at night. I can say my skin stayed moisturized throughout the night into the morning with just one use, and it left my skin plump and glowy.

Do I Need It?

If you are someone who struggles with drier skin during the cold months, then yes, it’s worth it to buy because the butter is a rich, sealing product. Environmental influences on our skin are very real. I tested it for a week straight, using it consistently in my night routine, and it was almost like an overnight moisture mask for my skin. In the morning, my skin was hydrated and dewy; I could’ve walked out the house without washing my face (I didn’t do this, though, I promise).

Since it has a thicker texture, it does take a bit of time to really seal it into the skin, but once you do, you can feel how deeply nourishing it is. I found that when I used it with Rhode’s Glazing Milk, it rubbed into my skin even better, which is great, but I often like when products act just as well on their own for people who may not have both. The product, even when used alone, is a great overnight sealant.

I was most concerned about it clogging my pores since it’s a thicker texture, but the noncomedogenic formula didn’t clog my pores at all. Instead, it left my skin with the signature Hailey glazed look.

I loved the finish so much that although it’s a product for a nighttime routine, I wanted to try it during the day, too. I didn’t wear makeup over it because it’s made to seal products in as opposed to prepping skin for makeup. When I wore it as my moisturizer of the day, I received endless compliments on my skin. With consistent use, I can see how it’ll protect the skin’s barrier, especially as it gets colder out. During the warmer months, I’d definitely only use it at night as recommended because it could be too heavy outside in the heat.

What Are People Saying?

Golloria George posted a TikTok praising the product for leaving her buttered up. “For my ashy sisters,” she captioned the video while showing the difference between her arm with the Barrier Butter applied versus her other arm, visibly less hydrated. Another influencer, Toni Bravo, posted a video reviewing the butter and praised it for being “hydrating, but not greasy.” A lot of sealant products can often be greasy because of the excessive oils in the formula. Bravo added that her skin looked like she put bronzing drops on it because of the instant dewiness. Okay, Hailey, you might’ve done it again!

How Can I Get It?

Rhode’s Barrier Butter is available today on rhodeskin.com in a five-ounce size for $38 and a 1.35-ounce “on-the-go” size for $22. It’s the first time the brand is launching a product in two sizes: one for your shelfie and one for your purse.
