Don’t Even Think About Body-Shaming Nicola Coughlan

Nicola Coughlan is once again giving a master class in how to deal with trolls who won’t shut up about her body. In a new People interview, the actress revealed her response to people who say her waist is Photoshopped in Bridgerton.

“I saw some trolls. They were like, ‘They Photoshopped your waist,’ and I was like, ‘No, they did not,’” Coughlan said. “I think if you wear corsetry for long enough, your body really molds to it. Sometimes they come in a fitting for a fashion designer and they put a corset on me and I’m like, ‘Oh, you can go tight,’ and they go, ‘What do you mean?’ I’m like, ‘My body now will go whew.’”

This is at least the second time in a week that Coughlan has found herself addressing unsolicited comments about her body. During a Q&A in Dublin last Thursday, a reporter said Coughlan was “very brave” to do nude scenes in Bridgerton. Without missing a beat, the actress responded, “You know, it is hard because I think women with my body type — women with perfect breasts — we don’t get to see ourselves onscreen enough. And I’m very proud as a member of the perfect breast community. I hope you enjoy seeing them.”

The final episodes of the third season of Bridgerton, which is all about Coughlan’s character, Penelope Featherington, dropped Thursday at midnight. Coughlan has plenty of steamy scenes, which she previously said she specifically requested because “it just felt like the biggest ‘fuck you’ to all the conversation surrounding my body. It was amazingly empowering.”
