BEST: Elizabeth Banks in Elie Saab Couture Who’d have predicted we’d begin the year with a great cape, much less end it with one ? Elizabeth has gotten absurdly good at this red-carpet malarkey — all the more remarkable for how easy it would be to go full Effie Trinket at every Mockingjay premieres, and how deft it is for her to model something just as indelible, with a flavor all its own.

BEST: Amy Adams in Antonio Berardi Amy switched stylists this year, and gone are the days of strapless, sweetheart-neckline sacks. Her perfect cleavage made us cry with envy in American Hustle (and, aptly, at the Golden Globes before this ), but this creatively cut gown from the SAGs did a tremendous job reminding us that her bod does not begin and end with her boobs.

BEST: Oscar de la Renta at the Met Gala The colors, shimmer, and texture of Karlie’s and Ivanka’s gowns are once-in-a-lifetime stuff even for the lucky ones. But though we were mixed at the time on SJP’s custom piece , hindsight suggests she was eerily prescient (or in-the-know): She insisted upon that iconic red signature on the train, and now that Mr. de la Renta is gone , it has become an iconic, poignant way to say good-bye to a master whose personal touch won’t infuse the Met Gala again until the inevitable day when it’s thrown in his honor.

BEST: Kirsten Dunst in Rodarte Let’s be honest, it’s a rare thing when we drape one of these laurels on a Rodarte . But the Star Wars series of dresses was so weirdly, delightfully ballsy and whimsical, and we cannot think of a better place for one than the body of one of the Mulleavys’ earliest fans at the Met Gala — an event that generally embraces balls and whimsy.

BEST: Lizzy Caplan in Donna Karan Atelier Imagine that point in the rom-com where the heroine arrives at the ball at the top of the stairs, and everyone turns to look at her as she descends in a gown that’s silken and fitted as a second skin (but which will get peeled off later by Matthew McConaughey or something). That delicious breath-in-your-throat feeling is the exact experience of looking at Lizzy in this dress.

BEST: January Jones’s Prabal Gurung Note that we said January’s Prabal , not January in Prabal, because we actually don’t think Ms. Jones herself did much for it. But despite her non-transportive styling choices, the dress itself is still unforgettable, from the fabric to the cut. Close your eyes and stick it on Diane Kruger, or Lucy Liu, or anyone who wouldn’t succumb to the urge to style her bangs with an entire can of hair spray. There, we feel better already.

BEST: Myleene Klass in Dennis Basso Hayden Panettiere scored with a baby-blue and peachy-pink version of this dress at the Met Gala , but the British TV host/musician beat her by almost a month to the design, wearing it to the Olivier Awards in April, and for sheer impact the black-and-white wins by a mile — or, we suppose, a kilometre. Klass’s appearance in this gown is now basically the only reason we remember that that event even exists (with all due respect to Sir Larry).

BEST: Camilla Belle in Carolina Herrera Camilla might be the best-dressed person you aren’t ever totally sure you’ve heard of, and she beat a lot of other very needy contenders to this fabulous coral gown. We especially like the clever clear belt that gives it a touch of shading without hijacking the monochrome effect. It’s solid proof that Herrera isn’t just high fashion for high society; there’s plenty for the Youngs as well.

WORST: Julia Roberts’s Awards Season Julia Roberts is a tall, rich drink of water. When she comes out of hiding, she has all the resources to kill us with glamour; instead she killed us with godawful. That Givenchy at the Oscars is dowdy and stuffy. The wrinkly Dolce & Gabbana sure looks like she shoved her own button-down underneath it, but apparently it came that way. And not to belabia the point, but her Lady Gumby jumpsuit from Valentino is a double-crotched devil. We are beginning to suspect that whoever is giving her advice simply cannot stand her.

Sometimes this worked, but more often, we ended up with stuff like the heavy and unflattering Suno shorts ensemble, or some of what Prada saddled her with — like the boxy white number that employs gilded freaking bike shorts underneath, and the Met Gala ensemble that's more Disney Does Gatsby than Charles James. Fingers crossed that she's gotten it all out of her system.
