So, my day was running along fairly smoothly. I got up, I had a coffee, I had a shower. I spent an hour or so trying to curse my hair into place. I was surprisingly unsuccessful with regards to my hair. Normally a good curse will put anything in it's place, but not a cowlick.
I needed to pick up a few things at Ikea, so at around 10:30 a.m. I hopped into the car and made my way directly to their candle section. For the first time in Ikea history, I did not wander, I did not pick something else up. I got the candles and left. I didn't even stop for a 50¢ hotdog, even though it was lunchtime and even though, although not technically hungry, I certainly could have eaten one and enjoyed it.
I got home, made another coffee and decided it was time to pee. If you listen closely you can probably still hear the echo of my screams bouncing off some goat filled mountain range. The thing about a bladder infection is even if you've never had one before, the minute you experience it, you know what it is. Technically I'm not sure if it's a bladder infection or a urinary tract infection. Either way, it hurts like a misplaced red hot fire poker.
I've probably had 4 or 5 bladder infections in my lifetime. One of them just happened to be earlier this year which led me to the discovery of the Frozen Yogourt Tampon. A cure for yeast infections. You see, if you get a bladder infection, chances are your doctor will prescribe an antibiotic which will in turn give you a yeast infection. Fun, right?
Almost as fun as a plantar wart at the age of almost 50. Plantar warts are remarkably easy to remove with those home kits by the way.
So once I realzied I had screaming pain in my nether regions, I immediately called the doctor. And this is what they said.
"I'm sorry stupid, we've left the office for the day and will not be returning until tomorrow, at which point you'll have already visited a hospital or will have attempted to amputate whichever appendage it is that's ailing you with a hacksaw and some dental floss. We're fine with either choice so long as you don't bother us with it."
Or at least that's what I heard when the answering machine at the doctor's office announced they were closed for the day. At noon.
So I did the stupidest thing anyone could do. I searched for answers to my ailment on the Internet. This is risky because as I've said before, the Internet is a big fat liar. Now, this is particularly risky because according to Google, every pain or symptom leads to cancer. Usually a brain tumour. And if you read any forums dedicated to bladder infections chances are they'll have the same advice the make believe doctor's message had. Go the the hospital or cut your own hoo hoo off. In case it's cancer.
In terms of cures I found the regular bizarro Google stuff, stand on your head, eat baking soda, watch the first season of Moonlighting followed by 7 consecutive jumping jacks.
I actually took the advice in terms of the baking soda and immediately drank an 8 ounce glass of water with a ½ tsp. of baking soda in it. I dunno why. It seemed plausible.
But I also found the cure that everyone has heard of for bladder infections. Drink cranberry juice. And ... drink a lot of water. Apparently a bladder infection is bacteria that's attached itself to the cells lining your bladder and urethra. Cranberry juice contains chemical compounds that help stop the bacteria from sticking to the cells. Water does the same thing, along with washing away the unstuck bacteria. Kind of like rinsing out a stinky flower vase.
I whipped to the pharmacy and asked my pharmacist if she had any ideas as to what I could do and she suggested the same thing. In fact, she said she once got rid of a bladder infection using these methods.
So I went to my local health food store and bought some concentrated Cranberry liquid for $16 and headed home where I drank 500 ml of water ever hour. The cranberry liquid is extremely concentrated so you only have to drink a Tablespoon of it a day. I also took a tiny chug of it at the end of the day.
I peed about every half hour. And every time I peed I could feel the infection getting less and less painful.
I continued my regime for a full 2 days and am still taking the Tablespoon of cranberry juice a day. And my infection seems to be gone. Just looking at a glass of water makes me nauseous, but my symptoms are gone. As far as I can tell anyway. If it comes back I'll go to the doctor, but for now it appears as though I obliterated my bladder infection. All on my own.
I wouldn't recommend this method if you have a full blown, raging bladder infection that has you doubled over in pain and cursing your mother for birthing you, but if you're in the very beginning stages of it, this old fashioned cure seems to work.
If you're reading this right now thinking, yeah well ... the Internet is a big fat liar. You're right. It is. But I'm not the Internet. I'm a just a gal typing away on my laptop, who has a perfectly healthy and happy hoo hoo. Hurray.
Please note: I can only endorse cures and methods I've tested myself on myself.

i am not a medical practitioner but i have suffered with this a LOT in the past and i never have this problem anymore after a friend recommended this to me ....
after sex (every time you have sex), OR whenever you feel the very beggings of a UTI start for whatever reason, do this 4 times daily (spread out) for 2 full days after the sex/symptoms, do the following - take one Uva Ursi pill (it's an herb - look it up), one d-mannose capsule, a full glass of water, 2 cranberry pills and a pinch of baking soda.
you should absolutely not get a bladder infection.
but - don't skip a dose, and do it for the FULL 48 HOURS.
be well!

Here's the best advice I've found:
-If you think you have a UTI, try a home remedy as soon as possible
-It's not too late if there's blood in your urine. It's likely to subside in a few hours.
-Seek help if you have flank pain (back/kidney area).
-Wear cotton underwear (or none at all) keeping clothing away from your genitals.
-Avoid coffee, tea, soda, citrus fruit/juice, sugar, artificial sweeteners, and spices
-A ziploc of frozen fruit/vegetables makes a good cold pack
(or dip fingers in cold water and hold on your vulva for immediate relief from the burning)
-Drink plenty of water (more than you think you need) without making yourself sick
-People have died from water poisoning, but you're unlikely to with common sense.
-Keep peeing. Even little amounts of urine wash out the infection.
-The urgent need to pee will pass. Our bodies were designed to want this OUT.
-Don't hold in your pee. Stay near the bathroom.
-The feeling of peeing out needles will pass. Just keep hydrating yourself.
-Eat bland foods like apples, peaches, oatmeal, toast, parsley steeped in hot water
(fresh or dried parsley will work), and yogurt (no sweeteners)
-D-Mannose is fruit sugar in supplement form available online or health food stores
-Capsules aren't necessary. The powder is cheapest, has no fillers, and tastes good in water).
-UTI infections are sticky (binds to D-Mannose supplement and gets peed out)
-Cranberry juice may work for you. Supplements or pure juice (no sugar)
-Baking soda (approx. 1/2 tsp NOT Tbsp) mixed with water or soup broth, 3 times a day
-Baking soda lowers the acidity of your urine, bringing relief from the burning
-The amount of water you mix it with is your preference. I prefer a 4oz shot, followed by H20
-Don't take too much baking soda (max 3 tsp per day) to avoid diarrhea/self-harm
-Over the counter remedies for urinary pain have a list of side effects you'll want to avoid
-Over the counter remedies make test strips inaccurate
-UTI test strips are available online (no doctor trip needed to do the same test)
-Don't have sex or use scented products on your area. Avoid spermicides and douching
-Reading blogs like this help because you realize you're not alone!

Thanks for the tips. If I get BIF I immediately put a bottle with hot water in my pants and a heat blanket over my body and drink a couple of water frequently . It gives instant pain relief and finishes of the BIF every time. I started suffering badly from BIF when I hit menopause. Working out 2 times a week not only freed me from BIF but also menopause sweat. But then I got my self into a dysfunctional relationship. Was loosing sleep... And then it is just very hard to drag your tired body down to the gym. But heat and drinking water helps every time. But be careful not to drink too much water at once. That can actually kill you. If you feel pressure in your brain you've been drinking too fast. Drink a cup even 15 minutes. I'll try some of the other tips and report back

I am surprised no one has mentioned the Chinese medicine which tries to cure the root of the problem. I unfortunately went to a bad Chinese doctor who was recommended and he fleeced me- told me it was my galbladder and gave me expensive herbs that tasted like death warmed over. After a week of this (18 cups of hell)! I decided to force myself to the walk in clinic/urgency care. It was a pain in my side. The doctor said I should have come in earlier- and gave me a round of antibiotics for a bladder infection. Since I rarely take medicine I did this time and they seemed to help. However since I still feel a little funky I read up on herbs and am trying a tea that has cranberry, juniper and uva ursi and parsley along with a separate probiotic. I got this from a Chinese medicine site- which listed helpful herbs. I was told you have to be very careful about some of the Chinese herbs in the store as many are not always filled with what they advertise- a homeopath told me. So we shall see if this tea- ingredients I read about on a Chinese medicine site and a probiotic will finally get me back to normal.

Has anyone been told the UTI infections was Strep B?? If so what remedy have you used !

Donna
I have tried Azo gummie gels and they are good for the pain, and now tried 1/2 tsp of baking soda with warm water. But, listening to your site I will try the D Mannso pills. Pain, swelling and burning so scheduled for cystoscopy. Wish me luck
Jennifer
Hey all you girls out there that get recurring and just once in a while uti's or urinary burrning. Miracle is AZO gels, I have serious bladder infections, double you over crying business n the day I found these lil gels was amazing, no more uti's or upsets from bladder problems. But i do take one every day. No skipping that one! :) On a side note, I did get a bad one from surgery, but found out I was cathetered n that was my foe, antibiotics and a large carton of yogurt every time I get the odd bladder infection n I'm golden. Loved reading everyone's posts, thanks all!!!!
Donna
Update - Azo gels are great for maintenance, but clear that bladder infection first with antibiotics. Anyhow, Cystoscopy was normal. Maybe a fissure so CT scan planned next week to check. Cleared 2 months of no strep b, but pain is still there. UGH
Austin
Is it normal to constantly throw up during s bladder infection?
Karen
Nope. Go to the doctor. Now. ~ karen!

In response to the Azo,
Yes it's great to cover and mask your symptoms. It by no means is a treatment. I used Azo , for a few days decided to go to urgent care, then had a nice surprise of a three day stay at the hospital with a stern lecture of why did you wait so ? How could you not be aware?
BONNIE
Does anyone know if the cranberry juice/pills is good for kidney stones? My son has a 4mm one he's been trying to pass for over a week now and I was hoping someone might have a suggestion.
Julia
Hi! Just found your blog. I was laughing so hard I was peeing Mysel I took the AZO, I have been drinking tons of water, so much so I, am at the feeling-like-puking stage. Btw, how much water is enough water to knock this out? I didn't have any pain this time but could feel the UTI coming.
Karen
Hi Julia! If you drank water until you felt like vomiting it up all over the place, you were probably drinking enough water. How's the pee pee today? ~ karen!
Brittany
I have chronic UTI's. I deal with them about 6 times a year (ouch, I know) and I've seen a urologist, I've had a scope in my bladder (also ouch) and I've had two things help me out with these. That pill that turns your pee bright orange, kinda weird but cool! Also I drink cranberry juice. Sometimes I drink Cran-Pomegranate, Cran-Grape, or regular cranberry juice and they all work! If you have the time I suggest drinking a big glass of it while on the toilet, considering you're trying to flush everything out. Good luck guys! UTI's suck, but I guess we'll get through 'em!
twiggee
for everyone who can't stand drinking baking soda in water (even while holding your nose), invest in vegetable capsules! the same kind you would use with essential oils. pop some baking soda in there and take them like regular pills while downing a bunch of water. trying it out as we speak and it's waaaaaaaaay better than drinking salty water and appears to have the same effectiveness! :o)

Hi I've had a yeast infection on an off for a couple months..I have itched my self so bad it hurt had lots of swelling ..three days ago I woke up went pee thought I was going to die it hurt so bad tears was falling...went to the Dr yesterday gave me meds today I got up went pee it still hurt so bad so I called my Dr she said give it till tomorrow and if its not better call the office...so it was around 3pm went pee and it felt better I was like yesssss ..OK I just took a bath used no soap got out still felt better ..now the last hr when I went pee it hurt anyone tell me how it felt somewhat better and now it hurts again ?
Karen
Hi Pam. Sorry about your bladder infection. This isn't much of a medical forum, so I can't really give you any advice. Mine would be the same as the Dr. Continue with the meds. But I'd also add in my little trick of drinking copious amounts of water. LOTS. Enough that the sight of a glass of water makes you sick. Do this along with the medication. Good luck. ~ karen!
Linda

While that mantra may have worked for Kevin Costner in "Field of Dreams," it doesn't necessarily work for
credit union websites. It does mean figuring out where your target audience
