If you are wondering why the Dubuque Community Schools got such a low performing report card recently, look no further than the recent incident at Hempstead High School. According to the article in the TH last week, a confrontation between a student and a teacher ended in the assistant principal’s office. That AP took the word of a teenager over that of a teacher, one with an unblemished 20-year career at Hempstead with superior evaluations. He was fired as a result. According to Judge Ackley, substantial evidence showed the teacher was the one telling the truth, and he was reinstated.

I don’t know this teacher involved, but I have two family members who are teachers, and I can tell you the lack of support teachers get from administration goes far beyond Dubuque Community Schools. The actions of this AP and the school board empowers bad behavior and as a result, to use an old expression, “The inmates are running the asylum.” No wonder they’re not learning!
