Breakdown of methane emissions in the U.S. 2022, by sector
Enteric fermentation accounted for 27 percent of methane emissions in the United States in 2022, making it the largest source of this potent greenhouse gas. Natural gas and petroleum systems followed, with shares of 25 and six percent, respectively. U.S. methane emissions (incl. LULUCF) have decreased by roughly 18 percent since 1990.
