U.S. energy-related carbon dioxide emissions 1990-2023, by fuel type
Carbon dioxide emissions from natural gas consumption in the United States totaled 1.76 billion metric tons (GtCO₂) in 2023. U.S. natural gas emissions have increased by more than 70 percent since 1990. By comparison, CO₂ emissions from coal consumption more than halved during this period, falling to approximately 781 MtCO₂ in 2023. U.S. coal emissions have been in decline as this polluting fossil fuel's role in the U.S. power mix has been gradually replaced by other energy sources - primarily natural gas.
