Number of marriages in China 2005-2024

Feb 10, 2025 | Marriage & Divorce

In 2024, approximately 6.106 million marriages were registered in China. This represents a decrease by 20.5 percent from the previous year and the lowest figure in recent years.

Marriage in China

In the last two decades, the number of registered marriages has grown from about 8.5 million in 2000, to a peak at almost 13.5 million in 2013. In the following years, the figure started dropping again, until it was at the same level again ten years later. A change in size of age cohorts between 20 and 29 years in the Chinese population corresponded with this development, but the falling marriage numbers may also be attributed to changing marriage habits in the Chinese society. This is reflected by an increasing divorce rate since 2000, which shows that the concept of divorce has become more accepted and less of a taboo in Chinese culture as it used to be.

Dating scene in China

Apart from the increased acceptance of divorces and change in social norms towards marriages, Chinese youngsters nowadays also have a harder time in finding partners or time to date, since Chinese workers experience the highest working hours in the region. This is echoed by the fact that a significant proportion of singles in China actually were professionals or employed in sectors under frequent time pressure such as media or finance. Even for couples who managed to find a partner in the end, almost one-fifth of couples could only see each other once every few years, which is a rather unfortunate situation, and did not make it easier for couples to further develop the relationship.

Latin America & the Caribbean: corruption perception index in 2024, by country

Feb 11, 2025 | Crime & Law Enforcement

According to the Corruption Perception Index, Uruguay was perceived as the least corrupt country in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2024, with a score of 76 out of 100. Venezuela, on the other hand, was found to be the Latin American nation with the worst perceived level of corruption, at 10 points.

A role model for Latin American democracy

Uruguay has many factors contributing to its low public perception of corruption, from high average income levels to a close-knit urban population. At the forefront is the South American country's adherence to good governance and democracy. In fact, in 2024, Uruguay was ranked as the 13th most democratic country in the world. Going hand in hand with trust in institutions is the prospect of equal opportunities for Uruguayans social advancement. In this area, Uruguay is also ranked as the country in Latin America with the highest social mobility index score.

A population in need of reconciliation

Corruption has long been an issue souring Latin America. Many experts in the region believe it to be the biggest hindrance to their countries. At the top of this list is Peru, with the largest share of Latin American respondents who think corruption is their country's main problem, followed by Colombia and Brazil. In light of a history of drug trafficking and guerrilla warfare, the number of Colombians who believe that the corrupt elite has captured their political system ranks as the highest in the world. To overcome the consequences of this reputation, the Colombian government has made significant efforts to pass anti-corruption legislation, such as the Colombian Penal Code and the Anti-Corruption Act.

Number of locations of popular coffee franchises Australia 2025

Feb 14, 2025 | Cafes and Coffee Shops

Coffee is Australia’s most beloved beverage. Thousands of cafés operate across the country, with McDonald’s/McCafé reporting the highest number of locations across all popular coffee franchises at over 1,045 as of January 2025. Founded in Brisbane, Australian coffeehouse chain The Coffee Club had around 220 locations across Australia as of January 2025. Zarraffa's coffee shops, found primarily on Australia's East Coast, are popular among coffee drinkers in Queensland and New South Wales. Starbucks, while enjoying success in the United States, China, and Canada, among other countries, has struggled to gain footing in Australia's coffee shop landscape. Nonetheless, the Starbucks franchise opened its first ever location in Western Australia in October 2024 in the Perth suburb of Piara Waters.

Australia’s café and restaurant landscape

Over 55,000 cafés and restaurants were in operation across Australia at the end of the 2024 financial year, with New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland home to the majority of the country’s establishments. In terms of earnings, just over 34,000 of these cafés and restaurants had an annual turnover of between 200,000 and two million Australian dollars. Around 350 operating cafés and restaurants reported revenue of over 10 million Australian dollars annually.

Are Australians coffee aficionados?

From strong espressos to milky cappuccinos, lattes, and flat whites, people across Australia love their morning ‘cuppa’ or afternoon caffeine boost. Australia’s annual domestic coffee consumption has been consistently over two million 60-kilogram bags over the past four years, with consumption predicted to remain stable in the 2025 financial year. At least one cup of coffee a day is a must for around three-quarters of Australia’s coffee consumers, with some even enjoying three or more cups on a daily basis. Several consumers have switched from takeout to homemade coffee to sustain their coffee habits in recent years due to rising prices across the country’s cafés. When investing in a good coffee machine for their homemade brews, performance, reliability, and design were the leading reasons for purchasing a particular coffee machine among Australian consumers.
