Introduced to the U.S. around 1998, It was introduced commercially under the name Balaton®. Interestingly, the name “Balaton” was chosen in honor of Lake Balaton in Hungary, despite the tree’s origin being far from the lake. This decision was influenced by the desire to maintain the Hungarian heritage of the tree’s name, with “Balaton” chosen for its easy pronunciation.
