JEFFERSON — Nathan Sumner pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder at an arraignment in Ashtabula County Common Pleas Court Friday.

Magistrate Joseph Macejko continued Sumner’s bond at $500,000 cash or surety.

If released on bond, Sumner is required to have no contact with the family of the victim, Heather Harris. He was ordered to undergo a mental health screening.

He was initially charged with murder, but was indicted on one count of aggravated murder, an unclassified felony.

Judge David Schroeder was assigned to the case.

Sumner was arrested and charged Sept. 25.

Conneaut Police Chief Michael Colby said in a press release Sumner walked into the police station around 12:45 a.m. and confessed to killing his girlfriend, Harris.

Harris’ body was found by first responders at the house in which they both lived.
